3 tours almost back to back consisted of 20 over stages per tour with little rest in between. The cyclists gave me an impression they are almost not human riding day in day out, 4.5 to 5 plus hrs each ride. No wonder drugs is inevitable.

Question - Why do they have to make it so tough?

Cracking a solo.
Because if they weren't mere mortals like us would be doing them.

They could always get a proper job. They might find out there are different degrees and flavours of tough.
I don't have a mechanic, an agent, a masseuse (Is that how you spell massage person?), a support car.
And by the same token I don't have a dead end, low wage job, several hungry mouths to feed....
And luckily myself and the pro's have breath in our bodies.

But I see your point.
