I used to watch TOTP every week, and every week it was 4/5th s****. It was better between 1977 and 1979 and then went back to being 9/10th s****. I used to like what was collectively labelled New Wave, which included a bit of light punk. Actually disco weren't bad neither. Abba and Boney M were cheesy, but still fun to listen to.

I saw The Clash three times,The Jam twice,Generation X,The Ramones,The Damned, UK Subs, X Ray Specs and many more when i was into punk rock in the late 70's,and i didn't have to travel far or pay rip off prices as i saw them all at King George's Hall in Blackburn! People came from far and wide to see those bands that the younger generation would pay loads to see if they could step back in time! And! i saw Madness,The Specials and The Beat all in one night at The Golden Palms in Blackburn i think it was 1979 but it could've been 1980?

The difference between Mud and punk is that bands like Mud, Showaddywaddy and the Glitter band, knew it was all showbusiness and set about making it entertaining. A lot of punk bands thought they were creating a new lifestyle.

Funny how people remember it. I was 15 in '76, I wasn't interested much in music, I had liked The Sweet & Slade and knew I didn't like Rush or the Eagles that kids at school were now listening to. By that winter my hair was purple and my parents were going apes.h.i.t.

Punks were just as anal as the previous generations prog-rockers, good grief, I would not have been seen dead at a Jam/UKSubs/GenX/Stranglers gig, if you thought they were punk, you must have been really old, over 18 probably, I'd rather have been caught visiting a Racey or Brotherhood of Man gig. I recall a punk friend asking me (in all seriousness) if it was ok to like Cliff's "Devil Woman"? Was it feck = one less friend.

It was wild to see good groups being out of synch with what was going on, Dr Feelgood and Eddie & the Hot Rods were cool as feck, Monday, but has beens by Tuesday. They'd worn the wrong pants, or played a harmonica, there was no way back...........

In general, the music was s.h.i.t, it was good fun, winding up my parents I suppose the most fun. But there was no sex in the punk scene, not for me anyway. I visited a (disco) nightclub, for the first time a year or so later and heard Donna Summers "I feel love", now that sounded pretty good, plus the women there were interested in me, must have been the eyeliner. Punk was dead.

Having spent my teenage years in the late 60 & early 70's brought up on soul, blues ,folk, rock, spending time at the then fledgling music festivals with all the good & bad stuff associated with them (including the music) we thought punk music was sh**** but liked the rebellious attitudes of some of the founders.

Punk has not held up well compared to some of the other genres out there.

[QUOTE 1409594, member: 1314"]I'm not a fan! But it is 1976! I'm trying to tease out a bit of knowingess from the bands.

By the way, do you have a link to the C&W song "I'd marry you tomorrow but can we have the honeymoon tonight?"

It's for a friend. (Don't ask).

This is the song, not sure if its the artist you want though.

are we saying that music is reaching that point again? that horrible stunted point where something like punk has to come out of the jaded synthesized drivel the record industry insist on promoting.

i'm sorry i appear to have a chip on my shoulder the size of jersey.
