No offence MDB. I've got friends who swear by them and I'm sure they are lovely dogs (in fact I know, I've been close without a barge pole). Just bad experiences I guess.

* - And its not just because she only has 3 legs (car accident) either.

Just bad experiences I guess.

I have only ready the first page of the thread....My 2p worth.

We have 2 Spaniels. Springer Spaniels to be exact. They are both full of energy, a lust for life and are great with people. I can happily play fight with both of them without fear of either of them going for me yet they are excellently behaved with my little 6 week old baby girl lying on the floor on her play mat by being very delicate and careful around her.

They do need a lot of attention and not suited to being left at home all day on their own. (we found this out once when the oldest was younger and he completely destroyed a brand new 3 seater leather sofa) It is also worthwhile to get training them when they are young as they will misbehave if they have the chance!

My recommendation is a spaniel. We brought both of ours from a local KC breeder. Now we have experience with the breed, our next dog will be a rescue from a centre. Those centres break your heart with all the dogs that are there.

Good luck in your choice! Looking forward to piccies!

Did you not read the thread fully? Its not the dog the kid would be wrestling. If it was, then yes I'd agree.

Yes I did read the thread fully, however it seems that you did not read my post. I said play fighting with your kids around ANY dog

Any breed of dog, if bred unscrupulously or then abandoned by their owners is potentially contributing to the problem of thousands of dogs that are homeless through no fault of their own. And Christmas is coming up too..... The f*ckwit season!!
This is true about all breeds, you are quite right.

What happened?

Playing wanger with <----------------- madam in the photo over the local park. 2 blokes came over carrying a staffie bitch and basically wound her up and purposely sent her over where she attacked my dog. When I was screaming for them to get the dog, they found it funny. Had a lasting effect on the dog in regard to her socialising with other dogs.

My aunty, walking her Yorkie got set on by a staff. She picked the yorkie up and ended up scarred for life on the hand and arm.

Group of us with dogs over the park and a staffie just went for the retriever at the neck and it took the owner to virtually kick it off for it to let go.

Next door's dog got off the lead and got hold of a cat in the street, dragged it off and ripped it to bits. The poor owner was distraught. Next time it got off the lead it went over a main road and attacked the dog with a man pushing a pram. This time they put it down.

Not being drama queen, but the above just really put me off. I'm sure you could argue that it's all the owners fault. I suppose I'm scared of them and if I see any now I go out of my way not to go anywhere near them. Like I say, the West Mids, particularly the black country is rife with them. It's a pleasure to go on our annual holiday in the UK and not see one of them.

I meant people on this thread generally, unfortunate choice of words.

You are quite right, I was merely pointing out what the guy said, that's all.

this is true about all breeds, you are quite right.

And I was pointing out that the last thing we really need is more puppies when there are so many other dogs in need of a home.

I know people told me to get a resue dog too, but to me its like saying dont have your own children, just adopt one.

This is Sally, our rescue centre mongrel.
I don't know for sure, but I've always imagined she's a staffie/labrador cross (staffador?)
I guess she's the kind of thing you had in mind?

As others have said, the local dogs home can be a great place to find a dog, but you do take a chance that you'll end up with one that has been scarred in some way by past experiences.

Sally is a fantastic dog, very loyal and affectionate with the family (including kids) and very protective of the house - barks like mad whenever anyone sets foot on the driveway.

When out and about she is always playful with other dogs, but is nervous of strangers, if anyone tries to stroke her she just runs away which must be a consequence of being badly treated by previous owners - even after four years with us she still does this, so I guess she'll not change now.

My Mum had that with a woman with an Alsatian once whilst out walking Bruno. It only stopped when my Mum threatened to call the Police. Just a Fcukwit owner, but we haven't seen her since though.

I'm not surprised! Although most of it probably was the owner's fault TBH. I don't say that the most dangerous animal on the planet is a human for nothing you know.

suppose I'm scared of them and if I see any now I go out of my way not to go anywhere near them.

Better not visit here then.

Despite being a rescue, Cindy is a Pedigree (we think she was intended for show but her owners didn't want her when she lost her leg, the sick fcuks!
After an excitable few seconds saying hello where she does a small, black furry impression of Zebbedee, bouncing on her back leg (which admittedly can be disconcerting at first to a stranger until you realise she means you no harm, she's just excited, and she can be stopped from doing it easily enough anyway), all she'll want is to lie back and let you stroke her all day. And all night. Especially if you have a ready supply of biscuits.

Like I say, the West Mids, particularly the black country is rife with them. It's a pleasure to go on our annual holiday in the UK and not see one of them.

I wouldn't say they are overly common here, but living near to an SSPCA Cat And Dog home, its probably more Staffie Crosses you see here more than anything else.

The biggest problem we have is a Beagle that barks at everything, and I mean EVERYTHING!
