Just wait til the people who have 'upgraded' to Windows 10 find out that it is a subscription operating system with a yearly charge (for updates)

Yet more frustration with Microsoft today.

My hotmail account has been 'upgraded' by them to Outlook.

Fine, but the page is a bit cramped on my MacBook.

Microsoft has the answer, 'get more space' it says. 'sign up for Ad-Free Outlook'.

Worth a go, especially as the next page says the cost is a small one-off payment.

Next click takes me straight to the payment page to enter my card details.

Problem: it doesn't tell me how much I have to pay.

Typical Microsoft, it's as if they set out to frustrate and annoy.

It's one of the reasons why I will not use Windows, which is just as counter-intuitive and user unfriendly.

I have to concede Microsoft appear to make loads of money, so probably have little need to worry about the likes of me who has been using 'free' hotmail for years.

It's still frustrating, and to give the first answer to my question: I can't see Microsoft changing anytime soon.
Does your ISP not provide a webmail service?

Gmail will collect hotmail. You might not like it but it's worth a try.

[Edit for typo]

My work uses Gmail and I did see a message on that about getting stuff from other accounts, so that's one solution I should have thought of.

Does your ISP not provide a webmail service?

Yes, but it's Sky and like so many Sky telly customers I'm always on the brink of binning it so I'm not keen to get even more ensnared by adopting their email.

I'm a notorious computer philistine (I'm pretty impressed still by ENIAC) but find Windows Ten very simple and intuitive. Mice never had any IT training and find my way around just fine, and even use a Windows tablet. Whether they're honest, snidey or moral I wouldn't say, but if a nuke happy caveman like me can use it then it must be easy.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
As the old saw goes.....

On the internet, if you're not paying for the product then you are the product.

For different reasons I went to look at the website of our largest mobile phone provider. Their most promoted phone costs £28 pet month, for a 24 month contract. That's almost £700. And people still complain about an email setup for £20.

Don't forget to run "Never10" if you are being prompted for upgrades. It's a run once to disable the update, and remove all the installation files that will be sat there waiting for you to say Yes.

That won't happen, according to Microsoft VP and former Insider Program lead Gabe Aul:

Consumer upgrades have never made much money for MS. The idea behind Windows as a service is to get away from big upgrades every few years to make it easier for MS to provide security updates and present a single platform for developers to target.

If Windows didn't have so many weaknesses and 'back doors' there would never be a need for so many 'updates' and 'hot fixes'.
I await Windows 11.

I'm using Hormail less and less and moving more towards Gmail. The only thing I really dislike though about Gmail is its horrendous Conversation View. Luckily you can turn it off on the desktop version, but not unfortunately on the Android App.
