I have dual boot with Mint and thinking about adding Ubuntu. Unfortunately I use both Itunes and Basecamp which don't have Linux equivalents and I've not found suitable ways to use them using WINE etc.

I'm also in a new world where I can't use the above from Linux but I can't print from Windows!!!
iTunes (for my iPod classic) and VIRB Edit are my last two Windows only apps (I also prefer eM Client to Thunderbird but can live with Thunderbird). I keep thinking about using a VM for Windows apps but I really don't have a problem with Windows these days so can't bring myself to switch again.

I switched to eM on Windows too, I use Kontact on Linux. I keep meaning to work with VMs more but it's the OH who uses itunes more than me and it just always seems like a long conversation I don't need to have.

You've just reminded me, I must try Kmail again! I used to use it from 2003 to 2006 and loved it then moved to Thunderbird, for reasons I can't now remember, and Apple Mail, because I started using Macs.

Having had Windows 10 for 48hours now on my number 2 laptop and painlessly – and very quickly - updated my main computer to it this morning I can see no real advantage or disadvantage to it over W7 or W8.1 – the virtual desktop feature looks like it may be an interesting feature but im not sure yet how it will fit in with how I use my computers – otherwise the king is dead long live the king – It may be that I am not very demanding or a “power user” but having peeked at the W10 feedback page it just seemed to contain a load of whining about trivia – for 99% of the time I don’t see the operating system when I using a computer – it is just there to run and present programs (I hate that app wordthing), help me organise my files and assist me gaining access to the internet – as long as it works I don’t care what colour it is as I don’t see it – anyway upgrade my number 1 laptop in the morning

What's different to the casual internet surfer? Seems not much to me but I know feck all...

...apart from the fact that Google Maps seems to go blank.

Nowt - because like me you really no interest in the operating system - other than it starts up your browser

(google maps going blank is generally a function of a crap internet connection)
Hmmm, I think mine is okay and it works okay if I use Chrome. Any other ideas?

I periodically had the same thing a while back - got rid of the 15yr old ntl modem I had for a new virgin "superhub" and it has not reapeared
I have a reasonably new virgin so it's probably not that.
I can live with the inconvenience of being Google-mapless...
... I know exactly where I am, up shít creek.

I share this ^^^ opinion; as stated above, I don't see the operating system when I use a computer, so I'm going to stay with Windows 7 Pro.

We've got 11 more months to redeem the free upgrade offer. I'm going to wait for more bugs to be worked out {just like any other new OS} and wait for the opinions of both the general public and tech critics to be built up by months of use. Win 10's current offerings don't jive with me. Maybe after some updates, I'll change my mind.

Upgrading the OS isn't going to be some magic super boost. Upgrading and then deciding to downgrade wastes your time and also has a chance of screwing up your system, programs, and settings in ways you might not notice for months. So if/when you do upgrade, be sure to make a full system backup on an external drive (wouldn't even trust internal with the way the Windows installer has handled things in the past).

I'm concerned about privacy issues, as outlined here :

the virtual desktop feature looks like it may be an interesting feature but im not sure yet how it will fit in with how I use my computers
I have different desktops for different tasks. One for email and cyclechat, one for ripping DVDs to my Plex server (Handbrake and a couple of Explorer windows) and one for server stuff with PuTTY and VM windows. I have it set up so when I'm on one desktop I don't see windows from another. No more alt-tabbing through 10+ windows or clicking the wrong icon on a cluttered task bar.

I have a lot of desktop space - enough that like now I have three full size windows open - will have to experiment

It's more about not having clutter on any one desktop. When I'm working in one PuTTY windows and want to switch to another I don't want to accidentally switch to my email client when I ALT-Tab.

Installed in yesterday on my main PC as i know it can be rolled back within the month, i found after the initial install it was very stuttery and slow but that might be just the initial install/updating going in the background, will give it a week if that stays the same i shall mostly be rolling it back to win 7 pro and leaving it be ;-)
