I rode all of last winter and what we've had of this winter at an average of 2-3 times a week.

I am flexible on what evenings I can ride and usually go out after the kids go to bed at about 7:30. In the 40 odd evening winter rides I've done I've actually ridden in rain no more than about 3 times. Surprising, if being flexible how easy it can be to avoid getting wet.

Ice on the other hand and I'll only ride main roads which I try to avoid usually.

Don't be confused by the premature Christmas ads on TV - it is still only the start of November - it is nearly a month until 'this winter' starts!
Haha, I know it's not really started yet but nothing will stop me cycling through these coming months. Done a couple of metric centuries in the dark last year. Really enjoyable around here as we hardly see any cars with semi careful route planning.

About to do my first winter cycling in a long time. Can I report back in April?

I don't mind the cold, so I bought "waterproof" clothing to keep me dry.
Sadly, it remained waterproof for a couple of downpours and now seems to have become almost as porous as any other kit I own. It's only ever been washed in line with the instructions and only with non-bio, so I'm a touch disappointed. Not to mention cold and wet...

I went out in my summer gear this morning, shorts and short sleeved jersey . I passed a cycle club ride and got some funny looks but I was more than comfortable even in the wind & rain.
If possible, I'll go the whole winter in shorts, though I tend to use a warmer jacket.

It was allegedly 8 degrees this morning, according to my car. I went out in my summer (since I don't have any winter ones) bib shorts, a base layer tshirt thing, short sleeved jersey with arm and knee warmers, oh and some fingerless mitt things. That is my winter cycling kit. I do own a jacket, an Altura night vision one, but it seems to be completely terrible. It claimed to be breathable and waterproof. It is neither. I just boil in the thing and sweat profusely and end up wetter on the inside than the outside if it's raining.

I loved it - We got about 30 mins or so into our ride and the rain that was due at 11 arrived at about 9:30. Yay. Absolutely soaked, but never cold except I did cool down quite fast when I stopped to wait for others to catch up at West Tanfield, but I loved every minute of it, just about.
It was only about 25 miles - did plan on 50 originally but no one else did that route, I think, and in the conditions 25 was about right, plus we got home in time for remembrance day remembering.

I got a load of PRs on it, too... which was surprising as I wasn't really trying that hard...

compared to the first time I tried this route after I'd just got back on my bike after a few years of doing basically nothing

I've clearly got fitter  Good stuff this cycling lark

I love riding in the snow, though for fun not transport. Great fun in spuds, you can pull off some brilliant tricks... provided you don't mind falling off a few times while you learn them.

Winter cycling is hit and miss for me. The weekends need to be showery at best else I won't go out....It can be frustrating but I may try and commute a few times.
