ok so after yesterdays 19 miles or so, today i set off for work, no issues, worked the day and set off home. Took me just over 20 mins to get home, not blisteringly fast - Barham court to Ringlestone Maidstone, but when I first did the same journey about a month ago, it took me well over 50 minutes (several stops) .

I feel great after it, and wish to hell I hd started this cycling malarkey years ago.lol

it cant get expensive, if it does Ill have to stop, the point here was to be cheaper than having a second car, and get fit. ah, it should be ok, Ive not done too badly, new shorts were £14 delivered.

Unfortunately it will get expensive...don't feel bad about it though, you'll be enjoying yourself so much that you'll be able to convince yourself (and the wife) that it's all worth it!!!

p.s. If you need help convincing the wife, just remind her how much petrol you're saving and how many years it's adding onto your life...I've never had a come-back from this :-)

It won't get expensive unless you want it to. Bits of your bike will slowly wear out but that's not much over time. Clothing will slowly wear out but so does any clothing

It only gets expensive if you convince yourself you need an expensive new bike and nobody actually needs one

Certainly it can be significantly cheaper than a second car. That gives you more cash for lovely bike bits.

Wise words but it hasn't stopped people doing just that

As mush as I would love to spend real money on a flash bike, Im no expert, so the one I have is just fine, and will be until such time as I crash and destroy it, someone crashes into me and destroys it, I try and convince my wife its making me live longer and she kills me using the bike, I don't see any reason to get a new one.

I may have mentioned this before, my first bike I guess would now be known as a hybrid, had tyres a little wider than the ones I have on this bike, but not by much, normal handlebars and only three gears from a small black device. Within the first year of having the bike, oh it was a used bike as well, I had it stuck in 3rd gear, not much later and no longer had front brakes, and after a bad crash into a gate (steel one) with someone on the back, the front had bent so much so that I could no longer pedal and turn at the same time, but the bike still lasted me up to the age of 16 (got it when I was 10) at which point the fact the only cleaning it ever got was when it rained, it never got any oil or lubricant at all, and it essentially seized one day on my way home, so I threw it over a hedge and walked the rest of the way.

I would be 16 then, now I am 45 and this is my second bike.

Craig, I would say that you are like most people i.e. you start cycling for a reason but you quickly come to find that you keep cycling for a different reason to the one which got you cycling in the first place i.e. you love it for the simple joy of being out and about on your bike :bicycle:and all the other benefits that come with it .

Now having said what I have, I agree with the other comments, that come what may you will eventually hanker for a better bike / components and the lure of these things will eventually beat you and you will find a way to get them

Depreciation, insurance, repairs, servicing, tyres & fuel. Add it all up and you'll see that even a pretty expensive bike will be way cheaper than running a car.
