I always thought it was “sure” said in an ironic sort of way.
Ie “Yeah sure you did.”
But now I learn it’s pshaw.

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
Have to admit this is the first of the recent obscure ones that I didn't know. I was fine with pshaw. But butte?

All these obscure words that most people have never heard of are turning from a test of vocabulary and logic into a test of patience.

Well it's now becoming a test of vocabulary that it never really was before when it just used super common words.

I was the other way round. I did a geography degree so knew butte.
But I guess the owners put these weird words in to create online discussion.
I guess I'm lucky then. It's easier to guess that BUTTE is a real word, as it looks like one, than PSHAW, which does not.

I think you're right about the current crop of non-boring words being aimed at adding a bit of online chat and to generally promote Wordle. I noticed that Tracy Bennett (the Wordle editor, not the dredger that I used to see going up and down the Thames) has been active on Instagram lately talking about PSHAW and the like.
