Having commuted locally for years, i got a new job 21 miles from home 3 years ago. Too far to commute each day on top of 10 hour shifts, so i did part commute for a while, bike in the boot, drive 16 or 17 miles, cycle 7.5, but the rushing around after a long day is hard, plus i have to go a tortuous route if i cycle to use sensible roads.
The 15 miles a day is good but its not easy fitting it in after a long hard day (which they ALL seem to be at the minute).
If i was doing 8 hour shifts...i'd like to think it'd be no problem.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Family gets in the way more than work, they do not value my cycling time and regularly plan things / dont get up etc etc in the time window i have for it , gets on my t*ts TBH .

My old job allowed me to bride 40 odd miles a day (commute) two or three times a week.

I changed jobs last year and whilst that has proved a very good move, I am now only 10 miles from home, so have to stretch my ride to cover at least 30 miles in a commute.

I also travel a lot and have to carry a lot of "stuff hone" in preparation and upon returning from a trip.

As an example, this week, I had to carry in my laptop and some finishes samples (lumps of wood, metals and carpet sections) on Monday, so no ride.

Today I have to carry a different land home for a two day trip to the Netherlands and on Friday will have to return them.

Result is, zero commute miles this week.

I have reduced my target to 100 miles a week and have missed riding any miles at all last week and this week because of work.

But to me, right now, work is more important than ride targets, I can still ride at the weekends (most weekends) so can get my fix, just not my target.

Take the bike in the car, cycle during your breaks?

Sell the car and buy an electric bike.

I suffer the reverse of most of the contributors on this thread. I live 0.7 miles from work..........cycle both ways every day, but only get a 30 min break during the day. By the time I have touched base with home with a text message or two, and eaten, there is no time for a mi-day mile. At close of shift, either the grand children have called in to see us, or we need to go shopping or there is DIY to catch up with or someone we have to go and visit, the list seems endless, so the few free hours I do get to go out riding for are precious. Work plus big family plus life wont equal getting to do what YOU want to do very often. It just means that I appreciate the miles I am able to ride, more than I might other wise do. All in all, I wouldn't want it any other way. Cycling is just a hobby for me, not a way of life.
