Would you let your child have the flu jab?

Doesn't there have to be a critical mass (no not the bike rides0 to ensure the success of a vaccination?
I wouldn't mind if they had the jab. Might just save their bacon (;))

I am considered at risk having had a VSD as a baby, and have been invited to have the vaccine at my local GPs next Tuesday.

After reading all the bumpf they sent in my letter I will probably take the vaccine.

I had the regular flu jab last month, too.

Not according to the latest information. There may be no harm in giving the jab, but if you're less likely to be seriously ill than with seasonal flu, what's the point of sticking another needle in a fit and healthy 4-year-old?

I don't know about the UK, but in the US I've read that there have already been more deaths in the under 5 group than would be seen in several years of seasonal flu.

How come your GP has it and mine doesn't? Still waiting here. We had the seasonal one at the end of September.

I think most doctors have it now and they should have received guidance on who gets it first - so the delay is probably down to arranging the programme. I'd phone and ask.

We have. They said "as soon as it's available we'll be sending out letters". No letters yet.

Most odd - I got the distinct impression that our doctors had been supplied with stocks a couple of weeks ago but that the delay was down to getting guidance from upon high on who should be given priority.

They telephoned me on Monday and I got the shot yesterday.

Oh well, next week perhaps. Once they get started I can't see why there should be any more delay.

When it first came to awareness in Mexico I seem to remember that it was reputed to affect the very young and very old less than normal flu but I don't know if that is still the case.

One of my teenagers is sitting GCSE exams in the next few weeks/months.... so I would certainly consider it. Its not only their health that I would worry about but also passing it on to other members of our wider family some of whom have health issues (though they will probably have been offered the jab anyway).

Both of my teenagers are currently getting the new jab for teenage girls (its a 3 dose thing) so they are old enough to understand the idea of vaccination.

Slightly OT, but this is a classic reason why people are suspicious.....the HPV vaccine only offers (proven to 5 years only - the rest is an assumption) protection for a few years and could possibly fail just as many of the girls become sexually active and at greatest risk, however they didn't broadcast that!

All too many times the information id fudged or spun, and that for many is where the suspicion lies, and with this a doubt about what is being said.

For instance the present Swine Flu safety is form data on "similar" vaccines, can anyone actually provide data for the present one?

There are data from the H1N1 vaccines themselves.

Thanks for that information - I certainly didn't know the 5 years thing.

As for the Swine Flu safety - I'm friends with one of the people who was involved in the trial in Bristol. I guess if I had any worries I would go and speak to them - maybe not the most unbiased information. I know from school that a child did have some reaction to the vaccination but I don't know what it was.
