I loathe and despise Christmas and this time of year in particular, I am uncomfortable with any reason to celebrate any kind of religious cult.
The Fragrant MrsP on the other hand loves it, so, I am lumbered with this extravagant nonsense.

At least you don’t have to put up with all the shite that’s on the telly.

I enjoyed it as a child, then as an adult I enjoyed the pub and partying, but I am indifferent nowadays, its nice to see the grandchidren enjoying the far too many presents they have, and thats whats spoiled it, far too much commercialism, I am not religious but I think its a shame for those that are that their festival has been highjacked, this thread also highlights one of my pet hates, its Christmas, not xmas, not crimbo, not holiday season, etc.

Having read through my rant I realise that I still enjoy the pub, off out about 1400 to 1800 with our oldest friends.

And who watches the Queens speech? I don't think I have ever seen one, and who's worrying if Phillip will be home for Christmas? he went to a private hospital by helecoptor for treatment for pre existing condition, I hope he is OK but things need to be put in perspective, we got a call from the MIL the other week she lives alone, she's 96, she had fallen and couldn't get up, she managed to pull the phone onto the floor to call us, the wife rushed to her and called an ambulace as she couldn't move her, it was an hour before they came, with her lying there all that time, she didn't need hospital but was shaken up, if that had been Phillip do you think it would have been sorted quicker?

Am somewhat ambivalent....

A time that has long lost its meaning. Whilst no longer religious, I like the religious aspects, a story/time of hope, light in the darkness, new beginnings, peace to all men etc. As an ex choirboy I love the common hymns and carols and the less well known ‘Christmas’ works.

I dislike the commercialism, the expectation, the stress it puts people under to make it special and to follow the ‘norms’ expected. I’d love that it was a time to get the family together, but could never relax properly to fully enjoy. It never helped that one went from the stress and fatigue of getting work finished for Christmas, and then being thrown straight into the deep-end of the ‘festive season’ without drawing breath (usually wrapping presents into the small hours of Christmas day) and a lot of travelling to Devon and London. Am also not a good receiver of gifts....
So mixed feelings.....

Now separated from Mrs FF (kids all grown-up) will miss the greater family gatherings but with @Hill Wimp will meet-up for dinner on Boxing day which am looking forward to.
Otherwise, we are quite free to do as we wish...and somehow it still seems frantic!

After 30yrs of working as a Police Officer and now thankfully retired I don't have great memories of this time of year. Now in my first year of retirement and still trying my hardest to slow down, but failing dismally you would think it is time to enjoy the festivities which I have missed over the years. However I can't quite get into it and it feels very pressured. To be totally honest I would be happy to just curl up with a good book and wait for normality to return.

There is certainly less charm about the whole thing now. Less fuss was made before the event, so the big day was a huge explosion of excitement. The past 10 years it feels like it's been going on all month, and I'll enjoy tomorrow but will be glad when it's over. But I am aware that we're the next generation and I love the fact that my son will enjoy it just like I did.

An ex choirboy here who also enjoys the old hymns, and the old architecture of the churches, so I supose I have something to thank the church for, it didn't give me faith but it enhanced my musical and architectural appreciation, but so did Pink Floyd.

Another ex choirboy here too. I did enjoy the carol singing.
