ooooh strong "proper pop" contender! [although there are still a number of Abba songs above it in my chart ... ]

Extra marks for having its own dance, of course.

absolutely!

Everyone disagrees with me but i do argue that back in the early 80's when heavy metal bands were regularly troubling the top 40, heavy metal was pop music. Trad sounding rock'n'roll bands were also in the charts, that was also pop. We can call it what we want after the event but at the time...

No, I agree. If it's been on Top of the Pops then it's pop music, innit. I rest my Ace of Spades case.

Pet Shop Boys with Dusty Springfield.
The poppy sound of the PSB is transformed when Dusty comes in with that distinctive voice.

I know A Little Respect is generally considered their defining moment but for me this is their best. Vince Clarke knows how to take geeky tech synth sound creation and combine it with proper pop music. The guy's a genius, and if you haven't heard his more recent techno project with Martin Gore then you really should check it out.

PSBs adored Dusty, they produced some of her work after this. And yes this is great 👍

Propaganda (ok just the 2 girls) have a new album out this year, it was limited release so I don't have it but apparently it's very good.

Erasure I saw live nearly 20 years ago at the hopefully reopenning Preston Guild Hall. They were 👍

My own favourite pop song, as in a song that it popular is this:

Can't name one, but I just love one hit wonders like

Pass the Dutchie, by Musical Youth
Uptown top ranking - Althea & Donna
Down Under - Men at Work

And if you really forced me to name one it would have to be

It's raining men by The Weather Girls

If that doesn't make you smile every time you hear it, check for a pulse.

Here’s a classic pop song.
And to make you feel really old, Toni Basil is 80 years old!
