There are in the panhandle area of Texas a number of cottages which have become empty following the drastic changes in agriculture over the last 50 years or so and are gradually being absorbed back into the land. Most of American farm land is now owned my huge conglomerates with millions of acres under mono-culture growth. Most small farmers have been forced out - many were tenants - and the cottages once occupied by their workers left to rot. As I drive through such vast empty spaces I think of the children that once would be heard playing along the creeks and streams near such dwellings. All gone now, including the ancient waterways as the land has been tamed and flattened.
