At least we know it was made it England , Aei was a cable manufacturer for both telephone and electricity. I still suspect it's electrical related rather than telephone but not 100% sure

Perhaps, still is. According to their website, not only a cable manufacturer, but, the World's Oldest Cable Company

I knew they were located in my area, but, I didn't realise how close, I feel sure they used to be in Birtley (just South of Gateshead), but, now, it would appear they are in Washington (about 4 miles from me).

Yes , known as a jointing Pillar. Basically a junction where 1 big cable (100 connections) meet various smaller cables , almost certainly now obsolete but left it place as it's asbestos based

Probably not as old as you think ,BT came into existence separate from the PO in 1980 , My guess would be late 60 early 70s when there was the first big expansion of the network

I had assumed 60s because that was the age of the houses - which is a bit dim of me because that would be better used as a guide to maximum age it could be.
