Heard our local cuckoo at last today, usually hear them earlier in May.

My friendly wood pigeon is getting more friendly, it now walks close while I'm sat on the patio.

7.30 pm ish, took a drive out to Eldernell, on the edge of the Fens in the hope of seeing some owls, its a vast panoramic expanse there with old farms, small woods, lots of hedge lined lakes, perfect habitat, seen Tawny and a Little Owl there before.
This evening...nothing. Talking to a dogwalking lady, she said she hadn't seen any this year since they've been building on one nearby farm, probably not helped at all.

Very still out there, perfect weather for a mile walk each way.

Yep, one heard this evening. I wasnt far away from it but lots of hedges and trees blocked the view.

Been making bird boxes out of all kind of materials for years. Found that natural materials make the best ones for getting birds started nesting.
Best i have done is a box that had a nest in within a week.
Then found a hollow log and fitted a front and back on it and a hollow branch for the hole. Birds nested in it with in an hour.

Not mine but my son just phoned, he'd been watching swifts or swallows darrting around the sky above... and watched as a falcon, Hobby perhaps, take one out in flight.
Pretty rare sight id have thought..

Didn’t they do well? I count five cygnets. I was quite surprised at how laid back the parents were. I expected to have to make a rapid retreat. They let us walk by without protest

Yes, more than likely a Hobby. Amazing they can do it and must be very rare to see.

Tricky little thing, hunkered down behind reeds, it knew I was there and held its head low for a good 5 minutes before venturing up. Most of it was completely hidden

patio-cam just saw a new stray cat walk by. pretty beefy. nice to see it has a collar. in the video it's eyes are keenly locked at the spot where our cat sits, inside. Wonder what our Rosie thought
