We noticed the same yesterday evening, as already suggested I suspect its insects, probably flying ants.

You can often work it out as the birds have to fly slower than they normally do which gives the game away.

Watching the shooting stars last night in the dark on our wooden patio, which is as dry as can be and a large hedgehog ran up behind me in the dark. Gave me a right shock as it was quite noisy.
