I like those, but am I alone in thinking the captions are unnecessary?
You are not. In fact when I first saw them I didn't notice the captions, and when I did, it added nothing. Quite the contrary, in fact.

it's Friday, which is, like every other day in Cafe, Unchallenging Thread Day.

All you have to do is to post a pic of your favourite cartoonist's work. Since I started it I get to post five.....

James Gillray. Two hundred years on you don't even have to know who the characters are to get the point

and now for something much more recent, but in the same vein...

John Glashan

and now for something a little more lighthearted - Robert Crumb - a cartoon that puts me in mind of Marshal Berman's 'All That's Solid Melts in to Air'

next, the arch-apostle of quiet despair... Glen Baxter

and finally, something for the boys.....Tom of Finland (and don't you dare google this on the work computer....)

take it away............
And now....philately will get you everywhere!

The Far Side' superb work, & sometimes ever so surreal

It's gotta be Paul Sample and his best-loved character, Ogri:

Pic93.jpg

Paul Sample, also did some of the Tom Sharpe covers
Cor!!! Mitzi!!!!!!

Has no one had Bill Watterson yet?

calvin+and+hobbs2.JPG

Somewhere, in a box in the eaves of the Attic, I've got about 6, or 7, Calvin & Hobbes book

I also converted a cartoon from a bike magazine into a poster for a chap I knew as it was so close to the real event.

Gruf!! (& Tracey), from 'Back Street Heroes, drawn by Rich King
He's still around, as is Louise Limb, who illustrated a lot of the stories in the mag (she also does a lot for 'Land Rover World' magazine)

Paul Kidby, for the DiscWorld covers.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Londons-easy-targets-David-Ziggy-Greene.jpg

"Scene and Heard" by David Ziggy Greene in Private Eye every fortnight - sad and funny cartoon reportage at its best. He lets people speak for themselves, especially people who don't usually have a voice...

...or whose voice is absurd.
