Your ride today.... (part 1)

Apart from a little jaunt out on Monday, I had not touched my bike since June.

This mornings 27 miles in cool air and sunshine was just what I needed to get me going again.

Nice ride but full of near misses.
One was a goose standing bang in the middle of the lane who took umbridge and went for me as I passed by slowly.
The second was my fault entirely in that I was so busy admiring a woman jogging towards me I fail to notice a car that had just got away in front of me at the lights had pulled over , I nearly went into the back of it.
The third was a big bloke running for a bus ran right out and nearly sideswiped me.

The joys of cycling are many fold.

not a bad ride today, bar a cyclist wearing inaproriate clothing who kept wanting to over take me.. needless to say he didn't get far with out me effotlessly passing him. only to find him panting past me shortly again.
That guy was on some mission for no reason.

Considering it is one of those rare warm , wind no issue days,
MTB rider, long trousers and one of those hi vis longsleeved over jackets Aldi specials that have little cups to catch all the precious sweat (omg) ... as tho it was the eve of November
Sometimes, catching the weather forecast is useful.

I didn't. I never do. My rain-proof jacket is so tiny that it hardly takes any space in my pannier. And I figured since it's August, it can't be very cold, plus I'll warm up en route. Hence the (hot pink) tank top today

47 miles on a hot and almost windless day in NE Fife.

I think this will be the only occasion this year I will get the opportunity to put the words 'hot' and 'windless' in the same sentence.

After yesterdays hydration problems I think I got the fluid levels almost correct today, 500 ml per 15 miles, however, I think given the temperature (+22 deg C) 500 per 10 miles would have been needed it the ride was going to exceed 60 miles of more.

Decided to try a new circuit taking in the climb up to Glenfarg and some smaller but challenging (for me anyway) hills in the local area, 3000 feet of climbing and I managed to grind my way up all of them without falling off sideways or collapsing on the grass verge in oxygen debt.

Averaged 13.7 mph for the route so I'm a happy little mile muncher

Depends which bit in Didsbury - avoid the village centre.....Cheadle could have been near Parrs Wood.... too many buses going through Didsbury TBH - really is sh!t how many busses go through a nice village..... lot's ofl al fresco - what..al fresco to 1 bus a minute......it's that bad............. tis a shame - I work near there.........

I used to go to the gateway from the city center through withington but I've found it much easier using the A34 now, that roundabout as you are coming out of the center though is abit of a bugger sometimes though.



Anyways I went for a ride today, not much wind, I wanted to take it nice and steady but I dont know what happened, it was trying to rain and the drops coming down where nice and refreshing, seen about 3 cyclists and a couple of runners.

So alltogether a short 22 miles @ 20.8mph avg.

Week after week I keep on breaking my PB's, I know it was not windy but even if their was some wind I'd have still done a PB. I was behind a car that was behind a big lorry for a while and keeping 30-32 but I ran out of steam as it got out of the 30mph zone and started to pull away.

It's being a bad week and I've not had much recovery as every day I've done abit of cycling due to work everyday this week apart from money at YWT, with my big back pack on I go so much slower, crawling at like 16mph, must be restricting my lung performance.

3 unusual things occured today on my 20 mile round trip commute into Cambridge and back.

1. Saw an amazing number of green woodpeckers out on the fen near Lode- at least 6 which was great. Are there more about this year?
2. A taxi driver stopped, despite having right of way, and let me cross the road. He waved politely - I nearly fell off my bike in shock.
3. I saw a Volvo indicate. I know- you think I'm making that bit up, but nope, it really happened.

I did what should've been a 10 mile around the leafy lanes below Pendle unfortunately it ended up as 12 as I didn't take a map and so got lost a couple of times but hey who needs a map when you can bumble around. Lots of fluffy bunnies leaping about - the track I was following didn't mention a bridlepath but I only needed to get off for about a quarter of a mile (mud cow crap and very uneven ground) but the rest of way was cyclable (is that a word? It is now ) And then just as I thought I was going to have to brave the A59 it transpires there's a cycleway Hurrah! So a lovely evening pootling around the base of Pendle.

I even found a reservoir that I didnt know about once and I have lived around here for over 40 years

Got a tad soaked on my way home, but hey, I prefer this to sweaty armpits next to my face, crackling music from mobile phones, the smell of fried chicken and chips, and other people's arguments with their wives, husbands, lovers, kids, dogs and parrots on their mobile phones. Mind you, I looked like a panda when I came home - my make-up formed lovely black circles around my eyes. Note to self: remove make-up before getting on bike, especially when it looks like it's going to rain
