Out on the Tricross at 2.30pm, 15° and dry in North Yorkshire. I’ve not done many longer rides this year so thought I’d try and get a 100k ride in. Out to Naburn on the outskirts of York then on to Selby via the Sustrans cycle path. I then diverted a couple of miles out to Brayton to see the first house I ever bought when I was 21 years old, apart from the plastic windows it looks pretty much the same as when I sold.
Continued riding to Cawood via Wistow Lordship then Barkston Ash, Sherburn in Elmet, Lotherton & Aberford. Had to go a bit of a round about way home to get in the Gran Fondo.
Just over 65 miles with an average of 14.4 mph.
Just to add, we have a lot of Red Kites in our area, today I saw one take off (just!) with a grey squirrel in its talons!

I don't know what it is about cycling in the rain. When you look out of the window and see it tipping down, you usually forget all thoughts of going out for a bike ride. But if you go out cycling and then it starts raining, you just get on with it and you find the positives. It cools you down, and there are no swarms of flies hovering around the hedgerows and getting in your beard. Today I knew it was going to be windy and rainy, but as this is the last day of our mini break in Suffolk it was a case of now or never. And I had another stretch of coastline planned as part of my UK coastline series of rides. I started off from the quayside at Orford, opposite the Ness, and rode out to Bawdsey Quay opposite Felixstowe at the little foot ferry landing.

Some great wildlife spotting this morning, probably because I set off at 6.30. A couple of hares, a heron, a bunch of rabbits, a fox, a red kite and a muntjac. The muntjac actually jumped out of a front garden in Hollesley right in front of me. No more than a bike length in front of me. Seeing no exit point on the opposite side of the road it then turned tail and did a second close pass right in front of me. I could almost touch it, and could hear its hooves on the tarmac. My closest ever encounter with a deer. Anyway, some photos:

There is certainly some lovely countryside behind Orford Ness, and I enjoyed this ride even more than the one I did the other day from Aldeburgh to Walberswick. I got home cold and soaked through, but it was worth it. Chalked up another 36.4 miles today, making it 75.1 miles in two rides while in Suffolk. Here is my "Flatnav" record of the rides:

Another nice chunk of coastline now followed as closely as I could, even if I didn't get to see that much of the sea in this fair county. Back home tomorrow.

Cracking ride, 42 miles 3000ft and average speed of 16.1mph so for an oldie I'm happy with that.

Just a short 37km today, a couple of very steep hills just around Forest Mill to get the legs working.

74km local circuit with a couple of hills (735m ascent) stayed dry and good coffee and cake.
