Ushered in the NY with a well trodden 25 mile loop out through Ratho, Clifton Hall, the climb up past Humbie Farm, the climb up past Kirknewton Airfield, the climb of Cockburnshill, then off road along Threipmuir to Harlaw and a further bit of off road from Easter Kinleith down past the quarry to Torphin. About 2° with some ice in places.
Lots of cars parked at the surf place in Ratho, I assume some sort of Loony Dook ?
Also apropos of the surf place, it struck me riding through its grounds, it would make a superb cyclo-cross venue. If only…

Looked at the forecast and the chances of rain were slim but it would be cool at 5C. After about 75 minutes into the ride it rained hard. I was soaked so I thought I'd cut the ride short and head homewards. The sun came out. Then it went back in and everywhere went pretty dark. It was blowing a hooly so I thought I'd look round to see if there was rain about....yep, in the distance and heading towards me so I got my head down and pedalled like crazy to get home before the next deluge. Got home, parked the bike at the back of the house and as soon as I got in the back door the heavens opened. Just beat it. At least I've started the year on a positive. At least I went out. About 33 miles.

Not as chilly as I thought riding across town to get a few tiles from Wickes on Riverside retail park (much easier on a bike than driving & attempting to park a car!)
As I was there, I popped into Mountain Warehouse to get some glives that were on offer.
Both places happy for me to take my bike in.. 👍

Back home on 15 miles thinking I should have ridden a few miles further to the Farm Shoo café for a coffee or summat.

Happy New Year. I got lucky today, the overnight rain had passed by dawn and instead we had a very cold but beautiful New Year’s Day. The only metrological hazard was a strong and cold Northwest wind that took the feel like temperatures to zero. I headed north toward Kendal and did a tour around the hills surrounding the town with a proposed lunch stop in Staveley. Not surprisingly most of the cafés and the bakery was shut so I was pleased to have had my flask with me to put me on. The home leg was a bit easier as the wind was mainly behind me. I had to make do with a supermarket sausage roll get me through the final part of the ride. Birds of the day included Redwing field fair and kestrels. Surprised and very pleased to get one of my challenge rides on the first day of the year. 102 km with 1328 m of climbing.

Pictures of Lancaster canal and the Kendal hills.
