League round 4 - Tour of London stage 3 - 1:12:29 @peterob
I’m glad I didn’t read the route profile. I knew we had one hill but I hadn’t banked in Box hill to finish.

certainly didn’t cover myself in glory tonight but I’m glad to get a time on the board. I did 72 miles outdoors yesterday with the last30 into a block headwind. I’m likely to miss ToL stage 5 so had to get in a late stage 3 today to give myself hope on the catch up day. How does this rate for an excuse @<Tommy>...Better than @del C’s?

OK - league table updated with our stage 4 (ToL stage 3) results.......

With it being a weekend close to Christmas, with shopping, decorations, Christmas parties and hangovers taking precedence, there was a bit of a reduced turnout. But no excuses from @berty bassett, who produced a stage winning ride to propel himself to the top of the table. @IrishAl himself produced a rather pathetic excuse (correct me if I'm wrong Tommy) of cycling 70 real world miles prior to his attempt. We all know you need a good warmup prior to hitting the turbo, so no sympathies from me there Al.

I think I'll try and do ToL stage 4 tomorrow at 6pm. I assume we're doing the longer event (55km)?

6pm tomorrow was my target too for the next stage. Not that I'll see you ... but you'll know I'm somewhere in the groupetto behind you :okay:

Signed for the 11am today ,target time 1h20m ^_^
Cheers Chris ..... I so appreciate you doing these rides first and letting me know how long the ride will take me :giggle:

This stage is fairly flat, with just the little grind through Richmond park on the little lumps in West End. Hopefully we can get into a good group of 10 or so riders to drag us along. Being on your own will seriously lose time, so I'm planning to have to dig in at times to stay in the group and keep my nose out of the wind as long as I can.

Good luck Chris :okay:

Cheers Carl, my pb for 1 lap is 38.49 ,so hopefully can better that :bicycle:

I'm following the same tactic as last 2 stages. Not going to blast out the pens - I'll come out pushing about 220 or so to keep moving forward but I don't want to blow up early, and I figure unless you can push massive watts you'll get locked into the sticky draft anyway. I'll up power to 250 to get over any little incline, going past the slower riders, then settle in again on the flats. Should then get into a nice group with the stronger riders pushing 3.4 w/kg meaning i can sit in at about 3. Hopefully this should see me staying strong for the full course, and not blowing up.

Using this tactic, I've been going from 900 place or so at the start (out of about 1600) and then finishing about 400-500 on the road.

Very hard in these TOL races to know when to push really hard to stay with a group and when to cut your losses and save energy (particularly when you know there's big hills to come!). Wrong decision can literally make minutes of difference at the end

Stage 1 I pushed really hard early and just blew up. Stages 2 and 3 I went for a controlled effort and (for me) did quite well. I figure on these very big races there is always going to be someone to ride with; keeping a decent pace will mean you will pick up those (like me on stage 1) that went off far too fast. For my stage 2, for example, I hit Box hill the first time in 800 (or was it 900?) position and gained something like 300 places on the climb alone. Stage 3 was very similar. By the time I got over the climbs I was then finding myself in groups with some who still had the energy to push on, but not too hard that I couldn't sit on wheels.

May not be quite so easy further up the road with the fast boys, but for us C'ers this seems to work quite well and I don't think impacts my times too badly.
