Good to know 👍.

If you have the tools then most bike maintenance can be done faster than the time it takes to take you bike to a shop, wait for the repair. And then go collect it again. You’ll actually most likely save time (And money)

I'm sure that is true for most people. However, I sound a bit like @Whorty - I'm more likely to try my own repair, cock it up and have to take it to a bike shop anyway. Now I have the time, I should really do a maintenance class but I don't know if that will ever happen.

Learning bits of maintenance was a necessity for commuting.

I did make a wheel much worse one night when trying to true it though. That was pretty stressful!

Just had a bid accepted on eBay for the recent Mark Cavendish book. ÂŁ20 new, but bought for ÂŁ5.50 plus post. Quite pleased with that.

Yes, Nick said he felt he had the capability, but thought it saved time to take his bike to a shop.

If you don’t think you have the ability then that’s a different matter.

Competency is of course a necessary tool like any other in your tool bag . But bike maintenance is very straight forward if you’re inclined to learn and practice it.

I just get a mobile guy to come round in the spring every year for a full service (4hrs labour - basically a strip down and rebuild, usually most consumables replaced). Then I do nothing in between except occasional clean and lube of chain. Maybe a barrel adjustment on brakes 🙂

I guess another factor that comes to mind is the amount you use your bike.

And being able to fix a mechanical while you’re out rather than having to abandon.

Im asking my lad, he works for a carbon fibre technical company.

No you cant reuse on a bike bar tape.:okay:

You can use it as leg warmers instead of socks though
Are you bonkers ?
I have re used bar tape to be fair. Why would you want to pour bleach into the frame Pete?

Bleach: There is some sort of mould inside, smells like a basement full of potatoes and wet dogs.

Bar tape: I'll give it a go. Someone near me is giving it away for free so I don't lose anything if it doesn't stick.
