Lee, as another older man all I can say is that I am learning I can hopefully go a little faster for a little longer. I couldn’t hold a 1 1/2 to 2 h cg ride and now I can. For me it was partly about building stamina a but also learning to ignore my inner panic around HR and go by feel and like Tommy, how I am breathing. So HR goes up towards max on flats but then I know I need to put out more effort to make decent pace and hr will reflect that but so long as I can just about control my breathing all will be fine. I think I have some progress to make on the ups where it’s less watts and hr I struggle with put breathing. Sorry, all me and not much help to you^_^

Nothing wrong with heart rate. Only downside is on the rides where you are tired or temperature is markedly different it can skew your effort. Where as power is power, you instantly know you're good if you can hit the numbers

i think we were all a bit late to jump on the athlete boat but it just interests me
if i was to go on watts , they vary so much i would get lost
up hill i know the watts and heart rate i feel i can maintain for a while but once you start going downhill or flat then i can get heart rate going bonkers but watts are no where near the same ? is it a case of just knowing what you can do on certain gradients
old in the tooth but willing to learn !
I mostly go by how i feel but im tending to use w/kg alot more than hr or watts

Tell me the segments and I'll have a look. Only going to remove the ones where i know or suspect there was a problem when I compare against my average times or where I know i was in a race and was in a group for e.g. not the Team World Trials as the fast speeds here were as a result of the peleton speeds.
