If you are assigned Cat C once it's ready then your free to Cat up if you like but can't Cat down. There is some value in Catting up as your results will be compared to that Cat only so could gain more points if beating higher ranked.

Explanation of how it all works;
My understanding Joseph is that it is based on the ELO system, used in chess and other sports.
Essentially points are awarded on a balance of probability score. If someone is much higher than you in the rankings then they have say an 80% probability of beating you. If they do as expected they get some points but not a lot. On the other hand if you beat them then you get a lot of points because it was against the odds.
I'm not entirely sure how it's adapted in a multi-competitor event but that's the principle.

From Mr Zwiftpower today:- "Points calculation has been drastically updated, still not quite there but close. You'll now notice almost no points for already highly ranked riders winning small races and vice versa".

For whatever reason I just didn't have it today. We had a nice big pack with a couple riders that I suspected would compete for the win (they placed 3rd and 8th within a few seconds of each other and the winner), but I was struggling from the start and just didn't ever settle in. I let the massive group go somewhere in the 4th lap and struggled just to keep going. Final placement 25th out of 62 qualified riders. Sigh...
