In the real world you're correct ... but on Zwift, there are loads of shortcuts to going (virtually) faster
On a side note of my own, I was really pleased with my outside ride yesterday. 52 mins, mostly flat (200 metres ascent only for that time). A few junctions to slow me down, road-works on one road that halted progress, obviously no drafting, some pretty poor surfaces at times but ... I managed 31.1 kph / 19.3 mph which I'm actually really pleased with. I go faster on Zwift but there the roads are perfect, I get better drafting, I can fly around corners at breakneck speed etc etc.
Strava can only estimate watts, so next thing to save up for is a power meter for the bike

Ive thought about a PM a few times, but I do an embarrassingly small number of hours outside, and I don’t ride outside for training, I do it for leisure. So happy to ride on feel and enjoy the view/pain depending on what mood I’m in.
I’ve decided to save the funds for an improved turbo if/when my current entry level trainer fails (think it’s about four years old now) or there is something compelling to upgrade to (Zwift hardware in the medium term with additional features perhaps?)
Well, the theory isn't that you just do loads of Zone 2. That is what you should be doing in the Base Phase. As you get nearer to your Target Event you go through Build Phase and then Peak/Specialise Phase each of which starts to look more like your target event. I was aiming for a June Peak, but obviously that has all gone out the window now.

. It’s great when you get that first decent outside ride in and it feels like the months of effort on the turbo have actually made a difference

No I get that. I was highlighting how much of my ‘top end’ I’d lost while not pushing myself in races. As I said that’s because I’d knowingly made that sacrifice to work more on my endurance.
I also often read comments by people who are struggling in races and can’t understand why. And I’d suggest that they weren’t pushing themselves hard enough with the riding they do. Lots of people have very muddled ideas of what they expect I think. If you have a long term goal then that’s something different.

Definitely yes to a power meter if you want to bridge the gap between indoors and outdoors. Like you say there’s so many other variables it’s hard to make solid comparisons to other measurements. Strava power estimates are well off for what it’s worth.

I don't wanna blow wind to sail too early yet and make you to hurry to purchase power meter but i can recommend Quarq DZero, it's accurate and it's worked well with me. Beer yes but Barbi no.Beer and Barbi time
I'm torn between pedals or crank .....I love my Powertap pedals. Really easy swap between bikes and work like a dream. Just wish they would read a bit higher
probably won't pull the trigger just yet so no rush to make a decision.
