As examples:

My best ever indoor minute was 492W, Outdoor 622W (done this year)
3 minutes 349W 416W
5 minutes 324W 388W

I have 2 decent fans, fuel and hydrate well. I don't have any rockers etc.

I think it is to do with the different inertia and dynamics. I jumped on my outdoor bike for the first time in a while last week in Devon and it all felt so much smoother and easier.

Hey ho ^_^

That's an absolutely massive differential though isn't it? Nearly 25% in one minute power

How did you generate that table?

On intervals. Power > Power curves > ensure both indoor and outdoor are ticked on the right column
Then Untick everything except All time on the left column

Then you'll probably need to add some time intervals to the default ones...
Click Best Efforts (top right)

and add the time intervals you want in your list. I use these...

It then takes all your data ever and gives you all-time bests.
I'll try and do something similar but it'll take a lot of manual inputs.
Hopefully you shouldn't need to if you do the above.

It really is. I did notice the first year i Zwifted, when I skipped indoor for 8 weeks in the summer it was incredibly hard coming back.
I decided it was probably better just to keep it going in future years, which I have done.
Indoor and outdoor seem to use slightly different muscle groups. I expect outdoor recruits more variety of muscles because of the freedom of movement.
Certainly when I'm going for a sprint segment outside I'll be on the drops and the bike will be rocking all over the place with plenty of extra arm input. You just can't do that indoors even with a rocker plate. But the difference between the two is a lot less for me than Martin.

That's brilliant, cheers.

Yep, hence why it annoys me so much ^_^

To be honest 10% is "normal" but 25% implies something sinister, like...

indoor/outdoor calibration mismatch (e.g. either your trainer or your outdoor PM is wrong or they're both wrong in opposite directions  )

you just haven't gone as hard indoors

your indoor rig is somehow limiting you

I actually feel safe to push harder indoors because it feels safer to me. Fewer hazards all-round and I don't have to ride home afterwards because I'm already there.

Sometimes though at the end of a finish sprint, where I'm fighting to get enough Oxygen in, I do get a few seconds of anxiety. I don't think I would want to push myself quite that hard when road hazards are involved.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Finally sorted out my varying resistance after a bit of fiddling
Initially i was trying to use an ant plus dongle and connect to the second device in the list but it wouldn’t register any input so i would switch to bluetooth and the list would have the actual name of the turbo but it seems that the bluetooth connection isn’t up to the job .
Switched back to ant plus and used the 1st trainer on the list with just a serial number which seems to have sorted it out and the last 2 rides have been spot on .

Keep buying fans until you stop getting better.
Then consider a rocker plate.

The main enemy of indoor performance is cooling (or lack thereof) and the lack of arm input you get when sprinting outdoors can be helped with a rocker plate (so they say - I don't have one). My outdoor sprint power is higher too. I don't give that outdoor 1s reading much credibility, but the rest of the data looks OK to me. Outdoor all-time power seems a few percent better until about 2 minutes.

Intervals really is a great App isn't it. Thanks again for your explanation.

Here is mine

I've just noticed that pretty much all of my indoor bests were before end-Jan 2021 when I moved from my dumb trainer to the Tacx Neo 2T. I'm using the same power meter (my PowerPedals) so that doesn't explain the difference.

I think it is due to the resistance dynamics of the smart turbo - as my old dumb trainer would be much more like riding outside. My muscles / riding style must just be much more optimised for the outside/non-smart turbo dynamics.

Intervals is the best. I think in your case it's also possible that you are more inclined to push hard outside because you race outside.
I don't road race outside so perhaps I'm more motivated to push really hard indoors. My outdoor smashes are really just short local segments, having a pissing contest with my clubmates.
But yes your trainer comments make sense.
