Those G Series Astras took a lot of stick from the likes of Clarkson over their use as police cars, but they were brilliant. Very stable and neutral handling, extremely tough, and rusted slower than some of the alternatives.

Conversely the contemporary Focus was a little sharper steering but twitcher and less predicable when on the edge, woefully unreliable in that demanding role, and rusted for fun.

I remember one we had - KX53OHC, if it still exists - a 1.7 TD and we found instructions on the Internet on how to tune it by turning up the mechanical fuel pump. Damn thing absolutely flew!

Where did you work.

My dad raced sidecars bitd and was a draughtsman at Foster wheeler petrochemicals.

Wouldn't have fancied being the 'Passenger' on that, front exit sidecar.

I’m sure this will help with the stability of the rear end of this Astra??

Whilst some boy-racers/chavs/neds (dependant on your part of the country) put some kind of spoiler/stability device on there vehicle, some with long trailers show them how to really do it!!
