It’s 12 months since I returned to petrol after 30 years of diesel. Let’s just say I won’t be going back to diesel and a modern 1 litre petrol is nothing like the engine I had in a Morris Minor 50 years ago.
Earlier this year I drove to Inverness with my 1.4 Tsi pulling a caravan the only time I changed gear was for roundabouts. Every diesel I’ve had I would have had to drop down a gear on some of those A9 long drags.

Sometimes I drive diesel, sometimes petrol, depends what's available. I must admit, I'm always a bit happier when it gets confirmed my next car is a petrol. But I haven't changed gears in a very long time, that's one thing that I'll never return to.

The 1.0 3cyl in the Skoda Fabia is a peach, lovely engine and having driven quite a few as hire cars i honestly didn't know it was a 3cyl until many drives later, you really wouldn't know.

A few years ago, when we were using main-dealer for service for the Fabia estate we owned back then, we sometimes got a 3-cylinder
Sounded awful

I think (may be wrong?) my mothers Corsa is a 3 cylinder

That's good to know, I haven't really driven a car of that size for a number of years so more down to my experience. I must admit, the small cars I had when I was her age were dreadful in comparison to the Aygo, the kids don't know how good they've got it!
True, I had to borrow my fathers Mk1 Escort Van...followed by a Diahatsu 55 wide van, with funnily enough a 550cc 2 cylinder 4 stroke engine under the seat. Perfect micro-surf wagon. Happy days....

Mechanical balance would still be the same on the running-on-three, but four-cylinder engine as the pistons etc would still be going up and down just the same.

Also, at the risk of being geeky, whilst a 120 crank on the 3-cylinder evens out the the firing, you still get a mechanical wobble due to lack of balance. Some Laverda 3 cylinder motorcycles had 180 degree cranks which sounded as if they were "missing" as the firing sequence was uneven but it reduced the mechanical out-of-balance-ness. These didn't have balancer shafts. Very appealing machines !
The 180 Laverda triple was made by grafting another cylinder onto the 750 SF twin, they vibrated like a concrete mixer and had the handling of a 'bad tempered wardrobe' (the 1200 Mirage being especially terrible) but they were mean 'mans' machines that scared the crap out of mere mortals.
Some said their Combine Harvesters handled better and vibrated less.

To be fair I've never ridden a Laverda, but they do sound great. I'd still rather like one - a triple obviously !
I thought they were quite well regarded at the time though

Like the OP, I was a big engine man and couldn’t imagine having a small engine.

My Mini Cooper 5 door has the BMW 3 cylinder engine and it it’s fine for motorway and town driving

However, I still sometimes get could out and allow revs, usually at a roundabout, to drop too low and the turbo stops and the motor stalls. Luckily it always restarts by itself with you depress the clutch.

They don't. My son got a 4 year old Skoda Fabia 1.2 Monte Carlo as his first car (19 years of a baby bond I saved).

I had a 10 year old Mk2 Escort as my first car. All of £800

Oh they were, one of the fastest bikes of the 70s but also quite brutal and very tall.
I was sat just there mid October on a visit to Whitby, concerning as it was busier then than on that video

When I first heard of 1.0 three cylinder engines producing high BHP figures I was sure they'd prove to be too highly stressed and troublesome. This doesn't seem to have been the case. I guess it's better oils and materials that allow them to function reliably.
