I have never seen anybody riding one round here, or anywhere else in real life (as opposed to on TV).

He was a Halifax IMP's member. Odd being passed by one large wheel though.

You forgot to times by Pi.

For the circumference of the wheel, yes, but that isn't how gear inches work!

My singlespeed's 52/19 gear is a ratio of approximately 2.74:1. Multiply the diameter of my wheel by 2.74 to get the equivalent size that a penny farthing front wheel would need to be.

As they're ungeared, what sort of gradient could a reasonably fit cyclist get up with one?

I can't imagine the Cornwall/Devon stretch of LEJOG would be much fun

Not quite the same but I ride fixed down here including 100mile+ rides most months.

Great video . I past on the A30 in Cornwall as I returned from holiday . Google found what he was up to great effort just getting up the hill I caught him on yet alone the the other 900 miles
