It does look very 'rust-free' around the BB and stays.

It's mainly dirt and grease from sitting around for so long on the top tube and upper rear stays so will carry on cleaning and see what it comes up like , using a mix of wet baby wipes . white spirit , fine wire wool and cutting compound mainly in that order .

It's fair from mint but carries it's patina with pride .

Yes and as long as the wool is damp and fine it doesn't seem to mark the paint

I second that...l use 1000 grit steel wool . It comes in little individual pads . The one problem is that here in France it is not particularly cheap but then l suppose that encourages me to use it carefully

What ever size i can get easily but used a 14 mm on this one
