30 mile round trip doable in these short days?

He HAS explained that it was based on a fairly short ride, which starts out with a steep hill.

No I read it. The thread started with if he/she (you say he but is that confirmed) saying about making a 30mile ride this time of year. OP mentioned average of 5mph for that ride then in later post said it was more like 2-3mph for most of ride.

So, a 30 mile ride with average of 2-3mph or even 5mph seems a stretch without having way more detail which OP seems reluctant to divulge.
How steep must these hills be to average that sort of speed over 30miles?
