This is NOT a criticism, simply a lesson to be learnt
Do not approach the insurance companies until you are sure that you will be making a claim
Always get the item (whatever it is) assessed first and then approach them
This is because the insurance companies tend to regard these inquiries as a "claim" whether yu proceed or not as you have reported an accident to them. THey will then increase your next premium / cancel no claim bonus
There was even one reported instance on house insurance when a major accident was refused payment on the grounds that because the holder had made such an inquiry. They had not declared it on their application and stated that they had not made a claim in 5 years on the form, the information given was false and invalidated the policy - which they then they cancelled on these grounds

Hi there
I phoned my home insurance company this morning for two reasons:
1. To specifically ask what exactly is covered re. my bike(s).
2. If by enquiring, but not making a claim, is this going to be noted and will this affect my no claims bonus.
Basically, the answer I got is:
1. My bike is covered for loss, stolen or damage. The damage part is only accidental and does not cover damage if the bike is in use. I said to the lady on the phone that this doesn't make sense as bikes are meant to be used; she says this applies to all sports equipment - too big a risk for insurance companies to take whilst the bike is in use.
2. As I have not spoken to the claims dept, there are only notes on the file, and this would not affect my no-claims in the future.
I did say to the person on the phone that it doesn't make sense that the bike is not covered whilst in use (which is a bit worrying and doesn't make sense). Does anyone know of any specialist bike insurance companies that insure the bike for all its use?
