I have seen the echo. dot etc and i was wondering is the alexa service have a cost like a subscription or is it a one off purchase included in the device ?

My kindle fire upgraded itself overnight with Alexa. Took me half an hour and a youtube video later to figure out how to get the stupid woman to answer me. No subscription costs.

You need an Amazon account, but there s no cost for Alexa. However, you can lash out extra on bits if you wish. I spend about £5 month extra on Amazon music, and stream it by Bluetooth through speakers built into my living room ceiling (amp hidden in loft). Nevertheless, even without that there's still something like 3,000,000 tracks available for free.

Running ceiling speakers by Bluetooth from a streaming service, Lemmy would have kicked yer arse if he'd have known.

(mind you with Jethro Tull you'd never know the difference. )


EDIT- Reminds me of going round to a workmates house for a few beers and him showing me his new 'Wireless' speakers, I asked what the cables were for and he said "Well you have to plug em in to the mains"

I never discuss anything more exciting than what's for tea in front of Alexa. In any case, compared to a smartphone the privacy concerns are minor indeed.
