I never liked his bushy eyebrows, but RIP all the same

Real shame and whilst the biblical 3 score and 10 was achieved, I feel that's no age for someone who has led a bit of a charmed life.

Also, he had quite a cool name that made me think of Blackadder every time.

Rarely agreed with him, but definitely sad to learn of his passing.

He got into the same lift that I was in once. Okay I was working for HM Treasury at the time, so it's probably not that shocking, but it was a nice anecdote to have.

Normally most famous/powerful people get loads of fawning compliments in the immediate aftermath of their death about how great they were and how everyone thought they were wonderful, even though they might have actually been a bit of a bastard (but no-one wants to say it). However with Alistair Darling, even while he was alive, you would not hear a word against him from anyone in the Civil Service - he was considered "one of the good ones", mainly based on the way he treated other people. I heard a lot of shocking stories about ministers from both major parties but he was the only one not to have a bad word said about him.

I liked the guy. He seemed competent and industrious. He appeared a bit dull, but that is not necessarily a bad thing.

I have no idea why the press have some fixation with personality.
