I’ve just read on the BBC that this year’s race for No1 is between Wham, Maria Carey and Pogues.
How depressing that no new songs get a look in. Streaming has ruined the charts for youngsters.
But I wouldn’t begrudge the Pogues to get it this year.

It's the media stating three songs are in a 'race' and the gullible public will jump on a bandwagon, ruining the charts for themselves.

as a non-xmas example...
neither Country House or Roll With It would have hit the top ten had the media not declared a 'race' between the two
