It seems to me that the English pie is ... well ... very English!

ah mate (says he adopting the vernacular) New Zealand is the place for pies. There is nothing that doesn't get shoved into pie casing! I remember at school having a staggering array of pied delights, some I would doubt you'd even think of! Ever had a potato top pie? (meat with mashed potato), How about a macaroni cheese pie? There were fruit pies for dessert too, so the real hard core pie fans would have a potato top pie for mains and an apricot pie for dessert.

And the NZ Railways meat pie has entered the realms of national legend. I'd be willing to bet you could google it and probably find there is a web page dedicated to it! It's as synonymous with NZ (to a kiwi) as the All Blacks and steinlager.

Oh, in respones to Noodley's earlier post, there is something called a tartiflette here in France but it's more of a gratin type of thing; potato, cheese and bacon. Interestingly it's not an original regional dish but a recent creation (by a union of cheese producers) to increase cheese sales....or so google tells me! The French ploughman's lunch perhaps! c

...about half of the time. A tourte aux abricots or a tourte aux pommes don't have any meat in them and a tarte campagnarde always has contains some!

of course there are exceptions

Honestly, you'd think you'd never heard of homity pie. A Devon treat, the homity pie is a pie topped with chopped potato, cheese and onion. The shop near us makes them with ham as well.

I'll pack the bridies. Mind you, should 'we' not be joining together with our 'Auld Alliance' against these English pies?
Do we fight for the supremity of British pies with the Auld Enemy, or remember the Auld Alliance?
Decisions, decisions.

Anyway, your recovery is rapid to say the least, sick on Thursday, recovering on Friday and planning a foreign campaign on Saturday.:biggrin:

So the answer is 'no, you haven't ever had a potato top pie'. Shepherds pie, yes. Homity pie, yes... but never a potato top pie.... sheesh.... ... Worra'bout macaroni cheese pie then eh? Notice you're all quiet on that one!

I've neither heard of nor seen a tourte, not that that's intended to be conclusive proof of anything! My lovely lovely wife does the shopping, I just press my nose against the shop windows!

Hah, sounds to me like these colonial types took the recipe for homity pie out to the Antipodes and then lost it. Probably got distracted by a pretty sheep or something.

Nah, I suspect it's more to do with scraping the dinner leftovers into a pie casing to have for lunch the next day.

All widely available in Scotland (well the bit I live in anyway) and I will raise you with Chicken Curry pie and then to top it Scotch pie (like a pork pie without gelatine) deep fried without batter at the chippy:tongue:

Not quiet, just thinking -I've heard of them somewhere over here, I think maybe in Scotlandshire as Ranger says.
