Ascension Island finally has a Government office. In my version of the island this probably amounts to a convenient place to hand over bribes or steal documents for espionage and blackmail…

I’m sure someone will point out that the sign on the original is painted directly onto the wall, but there was no way I could make such tiny lettering look vaguely straight. Besides, I reasoned that it may well have been made this way back in the day: after all, painting a sign on a flat board and hanging it on the wall is much easier than painting letters on the top of a ladder.

My version is also considerably more mucky than the original, but that seems to be the case with most of my models, whatever the subject, and probably says more about my view of the world than anything else…

You keep setting them up, and I’ll keep knocking them down ;-) Morecambe and Wise eat your hearts out!

In that vein, guess what we think of it so far...

I think this may be peak nerd right here.

Some time ago I built a monowheel out of card, just to see if I could. It worked to a point, but it was a bit big and I hadn’t planned minor details like where I could fit the driver, so apart from being an arcane prop for some tabletop games it never saw the light of day. Ever since then, I’ve had a vague idea about making a smaller, neater, and more believable version.

With “real life” getting a little exhausting recently, I decided that would be an ideal project from the great long list that I wrote back at the beginning of the year.

I’ve been watching far too many online videos about making models from household junk, and amassing a very strange spares box, so I decided it was time to see if I could use any of it. The “engine” of the monowheel is made of parts from a pen, printer cartridges, bike bits, guitar strings, a superglue bottle, several paper clips, cable ties, and some cigarette lighters.

Behold, technology.

After a fair amount of a hacksaw use, I also managed to fit the driver in. I don’t know what she’s called yet, or why she’s driving in these races. I’d love some suggestions on this: someone must be better than me at making up names, or perhaps someone has heard of an obscure female inventor/racing driver from the period with a cool sounding name?

While you’re doing that I’ll work on some ridiculously over the top weaponry, and decide what colour this will end up being…
