Hi.
I was just wondering are there any watch geeks here on Cycle Chat.
Unfortunately i have a weak spot when it comes to resisting watches and could quite easily spend more than what i earn on them :=))
I think it all started many moons ago when i inherited a watch from my long gone grandad. Its a Tramway pocket watch from the early 1900s, that from what i understand was made in Cairo. I keep meaning to take it to a watch specialist to find out some more history on it. It still works perfectly after all these years and will never part with it, as its a great memory to my grandad. When i was a youngster Casio digital watches were all the rage but trends changed and became more inclined to the more traditional faced watches. I also like self winding skeleton watches. They constantly fascinate me with there intricate mechanical movements and the skill needed to make them.
Back to Casio watches, i really find my Casio compass watch really useful whilst cycling. Here in Wales there's many single track roads and remote tracks to explore and my sense of direction is not the best. The electronic compass on my watch has come in really handy on numerous occasions in getting me going in the right direction. :=)

I'm middling. Not a full on geeky collector, but I have a few. I alternate for daily wear between a G Shock and a Traser, tending to use the G Shock for cycling and SAR work and the Traser other times. For rubbing poor peoples noses in my wealth I have a Tudor Pellagos.

I'm with the OP. Whenever I went on holiday as some people would buy a souvenir thimble or wotnot I would buy a watch. Bought them on planes, from jewellers, hotel foyers, markets etc.

Most expensive was a Tag but so uncomfortable to wear, prefer a lighter smaller watch.

Last count (they are now ignored in a box in the garage) I had circa 300. And guess what, I only ever wear the same one, a cheap Puegeot promotional one free from work.

Edit. From when I used to work!

I'm a bit of a watch geek, although i dont buy really expensive watches.
I have an interest in Seiko automatic divers watches. Plus Casio Protreks, G Shocks and Edifice. Currently have about 20 watches, but i'm on a watch buying hiatus for the time being. Even though there's many watches out there i'd quite like to add to my small collection, but its easy to get carried away if you let it.

I have a few , mainly wind up watches although I have got a few quartz ones. It all started when I saw a nice looking mens Roamer Standard in an auction.
I quite like doing research in to the unusual makes that I sometimes find in the auction lots . I did try at one time to try to have a watch for every letter of the alphabet but have since stopped collecting .

I've had a number of Rolex, Omega, Breitling and TAG over the years but they've all gone now as I no longer dress up for work and all were too expensive to wear whilst climbing, and cycling etc.

I now have a small collection of G-Shocks and they are far and away my favourite watches ever. They take a real beating and are cheap enough so that if they get dinged you won't cry. Best value watches on the planet imo.

I remember years ago when i was young and stupid (still am the stupid ) and we were holidaying in Tenerife. A group of four of us went and we were barely in our twentys. One evening we went out for a meal and had consumed many banana and ron miel drinks and were feeling a little light headed. Back at the hotel we settled down to watch some live music when this huge African guy came walking round the tables selling all kinds of watches and jewelry.

Things seem to sparkle more after a few drinks and we all ended up buying something off him. After alot of bartering i ended up with a Tag Heur watch that could resist water for 100s of metres. The ex sported some amazing gold necklaces and the other couple too ended up sporting some amazing bargains. The next day we walking round the resort sporting our new ill gains. My mate didn't look short of looking like MrT.
We looked a right bunch of wally,s:=)) thinking back on it.
A few days later the inevitable happened. We got caught in a heavy rain shower and my Tag watch steamed up and let water in like a sieve. The jewellery the ladies bought turned a lovely shade of green as well as my mates. Ha, you live and learn %=)

I think back in the day we called them "ju ju men" Not sure, like most other things in life, it is politically correct nowadays.

After seeing this thread I've dug out my 20 year old G-Shock Protection watch. I think they sell now for about 70 quid. I haven't worn it more or less since it was bought for me all those years ago. It's too big for my weedy wrists! I haven't worn any watch at all for about 5 years. No watch no phone,no telly....mmm,sounds like I've 'dropped out'!

Good morning,

I have a Tudor Black Shield, IMG_0009.JPG it was one of the first watches with a completely ceramic case, I do sort of fancy an Omega Grey Side Of The Moon but it is too expensive. :-(

This is kept on whilst riding or in the gym and if it cracks so be it.

I am disappointed by it in the sense that it doesn't give the same feeling as an expensive suit and the market is fairly short of interesting watches with stopwatches so when it breaks I will probably go back to a Seiko.

The other downside to Tudor is that after I bought the watch they started using David Beckham and Lady Gaga to advertise the brand.

Despite this the Black Bay Bronze looks brilliant in the flesh and the North Flag looks great some days and a mismatch of parts another day

I am in love with Spring Drive, a spring moves the hands, powers a quartz reference oscillator and a magnetic brake, it is immense technical overkill and all the better for it.

Bye
