it looks like they have been left under inflated , i had same issue on a set of Vittorio zaffiro's i replaced last week they were 3 years old and had only done less than 1000 k and a lot of the time just left standing and under inflated so always worth checking tyre pressure's even if not in use and rotate the wheel so they dont sit on the same spot all the time

They’ve always been inflated, and the bike hangs up when not in use. If you check the pic upthread I reckon I can see the fabric beneath.

It could be something to do with the fact that red pigments are easily degraded by UV. The owners of faded old red cars will attest to this. Alternatively the plasticiser in the red cosmetic finish could have migrated out, causing the finish to become brittle and crack. If the carcass looked OK I would continue to ride them, although at night only, out of embarrassment at the colour not fear of UV.
