The woman who started BET365 in her garden shed (or garage??) paid herself £275M last year. It makes her the highest paid woman in the world.
TBH I have no objection to people who own their own business paying themselves very well.......BUT when you have people so addicted to gambling that they lose EVERYTHING ........something seems very wrong here.
Its seems this whole industry needs regulating, quickly.
I have never gambled (or smoked) but I understand that it quickly gets such a mental hold that, for some people, its virtually impossible to break free.

I have a similar feeling when we have the 'Volksfest' here in Stuttgart with extremely high prices on beer. It seems that a very small number of people make a lot of money out of it, and the city ends up dealing with the mess.

That's true. But one could also make the same argument for alcohol . Some people get addicted to alcohol and lose everything. It doesn't stop the rest of us drinking responsibly though.
Cant argue with that. But I am not "comparing" it to anything.....just saying it seems wrong.
And I am not sure any director of a brewery has ever been paid soooo much.
BTW I do drink responsibly. Never before 07.00 and never while in bed (well maybe sometimes)

Many things we do are enjoyed by most but equally government and society accept that some things need to be regulated. You can't for the common good walk into a pub and be served with a pint of scotch. But are currently free to bet £100 a time on fixed betting machine or online. Given that gambling is many times more additive than heroin you can't see stuff like this and not find it questionable. If you head up a gambling company and the current public unease with such companies and like her put for head above the parapet she can't not expect a few shot's to come her way.

I can’t get outraged by anyone who owns a legal business earning a large sum of money.

I even like to odd punt on the horses and the occaisional visit to the casino.

However I do share concerns about the growth of online gambling.

The ability to sit at home on your own and gamble away using debit and credit cards is frightening and I do believe that much more regulation needs to be put in place to protect problem gamblers.

The bookies always win.
Anyone who thinks different is a mug.
How can this lady justify earning over half a billion pounds in two years. It is sickening when you think where this money comes from.

Was half listening to the news and I'm sure they said the company had a total of £52 billion in bets last year..... Crikey!

It occurs to me that as part of my job is helping people who get into a mess because of gambling, and the organisation I work for is always short of money, perhaps we should say that there's a 1% duty on all gambling profits to pay for therapy, in the same way as there is duty paid on Alcohol for sorting out the mess it makes in society.

I know German Casinos are legally required to pay out half of the income as prize money. What is the rule in the UK?
