Well, after 7 weeks off the bike after a broken thumb, I have now been given the green light to get back on it by my consultant :biggrin:.

Now I have a bit of a dilemma. My current bike was a cheap one and needs more money spending on it to get it road worthy than it actually cost. So, I need to get a new bike to commute on and possibly ride evenings/weekends. my initial thoughts were to get a road bike but at some point, mainly weekends, I will need to put a childs seat on the back. Would a road bike be ok with this?

My budget is upto £800, any suggestions?

What is your current bike?
What's wrong with it?

I only have a Decathlon Rockrider which I was thinking of changing anyway before I came off. It needs new pedals, derailleur, seat, cassette and rear wheel. So all in all it will cost a lot more than the bike.

How many gears does it have?

Could be fixed quite cheaply. I have bits in my shed including two MTB wheels that would probably do it. Where abouts you from? Failing that, you can probably get most the bits fairly cheap from ebay.

I'd say fix it up, put some semi-slick tyres on and use that bike with a baby seat/trailer, bad weather commuting and for going to the pub/supermarket etc.

Road salt and lavish bikes are not a great combination! Also, if you want to buy a racing bike/road bike, you've no need to comprimise.

I first read that as 7 years!!! lol...Going to ask how long does a thumb take to heal

Not sure about putting a child seat on a road bike though. Maybe it's a psychological thing, but I wouldn't put feel safe about having a heavy child (even the smallest become heavy when balanced over the back wheel) on a light road bike.
I've had various seats and on various bikes - mtb, old sturdy town bikes, but have never even considered putting kids on my old road bike. They just don't seem solid enough.

I don't want to hijack your thread, but would be interested to know whether others have done the road bike/kid seat combination.

Btw, do you need a new bike, or just really want a new bike..?
