Back in the saddle - thinking about an Orbea

Hi Guys, just started riding again having had my Trek Hybrid serviced by my LBS. Used to commute 15 miles a day on it but since moving it has been sat in the garage for a couple years. Have had a few rides this week and realise how much I miss it. Also have lost a stone since Xmas and want to keep that going so cycling would be good additional exercise.

Anyway, am considering a road bike and seen an Orbea Onix on e-bay close to me. Any thoughts? Seems cheap, accepting there are no bids yet, but can't fathom out which year it is and how much it would have cost new. Appreciate it needs some minor attention, but am reluctant to fork out a lot for a new bike as I haven't ridden this type of bike since my teens! Will still use the hybrid for some off road riding too and hopefully gentle rides accompanied by the wife.

Also watching a couple others nearby, although am not limited to Orbea, just read some good reviews about the brand. Thanks in advance for any advice ^_^

Ask the seller to show you the receipt or proof of ownership. Other than that, try a few out before buying. If a seller won't let you try it, go elsewhere

@biggs682 is also in Northants and might have something for sale, although he specialises more in retro/vintage

Which actual bike are you considering?

Thanks, I have actually moved now, am in Swindon, so these are all quite local. The Onix was the one I was most interested in. The seller is selling it on behalf of a friend apparently. Would definitely want to see it before committing, but can't find this particular model on the net to gauge any reviews , age or original RRP etc.

It's carbon, so check the frame very careful for any signs of cracks or damage, it looks a fair few years old. Ask the seller

2011, so would have been launched in 2010. So coming up for 8-10 years old

You'd want to ask how many miles it's been done, when it was last ridden, when it was last serviced, parts replaced

Thanks guys, sound advice. Am a bit wary now given the comments about carbon, and as I am no lightweight  at just over 15 stone.
Depends on what it goes for I guess, if there aren't many other bids could be worth a punt, but I won't pay silly money as I would prefer the assurance of a new bike, even if only in terms of history rather than the benefit of any limited warranty etc.

15 stone is no problem for a carbon frame. Wheels are potentially the weak part but not if you’ve got enough spokes

Thanks @vickster

@steveinnorthants sorry for not replying earlier in the week . It's hard selling 2nd hand bikes at the moment there are a couple of very nice bike that have popped up for sale recently in Northamptonshire again that were being advertised about 6 months ago , this is more than likely the same in Swindon so go and try a few if you find one you like and feel happy about you can always throw a low offer in and see what happens

Google threw this up
https://www.cyclechat.net/threads/orbea-onix-carbon-anyone-know-about-these.97112/

Don't know if @Dave7 tried/rode/bought

This suggests the Onix is quite a racy model, as a roadbike newbie, a more relaxed geometry such as on a Giant defy might be more comfortable but on,y you can know when you try out

I did look at Orbea and was impressed by the build etc but the Giant won as it was more relaxed.

Cheers guys, the Orbea went for over £400, more than I was prepared to spend on a 2nd hand bike I couldn't be sure of, so ended up going to a few LBS's and now have a Cannondale Optimo which I am very happy with so far. Been out 3 times this week, only 10-15 miles a time and whilst I suffered a bit after the first couple of rides in the posterior area, am gradually getting used to my first road bike for about40 years!!!!
