I have just signed up to Strava. Some of those guys must be using fast e-bikes. I'm 750th out of 1200 on part of my ride to work (and that's my fast bit).

No we use legs. Batteries are too slow

Best place to whip an E-bike is on a steep uphill, the batteries and motor just aren't up to the job of hauling all that gubbins, plus a rider. And yes, I am speaking from experience, there's one I sometimes see on my commute, and woe betide them if I slot in behind from a side road just before the road goes skywards. :cycle:

I used to use the canal tow path to commute when I started out. Perfectly flat, but back then 15 mph was an ask for me. I saw an elderly man up ahead that I was only gaining on really slowly. His cadence (though back then I didn't even know the meaning of the word) was incredibly slow, and I couldn't understand why this 70+ year old gent was putting me to shame, so I upped my effort a lot, caught and passed him. It was only after I passed him I noticed he was on an ebike. I then had to maintain the effort to not lose face, and found there's no option to "turn off at the next side road" on a canal. Felt like I almost killed myself!

I heard someone on Radio 5 last month going about able people using mobility scooters through sheer laziness as it meant they could ride them to the supermarket and then ride them round the supermarket and then home with shopping on board, no legislation on this at all, it was part of a general lifestyle/coronary tip I think.

Yes better than a car and I suppose they do some cycling? But they are missing out on some or all of the buzz from the exercise and the feeling that every mph you manage at any point is all down to your own efforts

I despair of anyone that genuinely didn't get the Op's meaning and rather disapprove of those that pretended to so they can get all hissy

MY MiL was in her early 80's and rode an American Beach Cruiser with a motor.

Her great delight was burning up teenagers on BMX!

That's America's influence. We were in Disney two years ago. We stayed at a Disney Hotel. We saw two larger folk (not massive, just overweight), but early 50's, jump on their 4x4 sized 'scooters' (mini sized) and shoot off to their car - just a few minutes walk as the hotel sites are massive. Then they were fine to jump out of the 4x4 scooters, and climb into their massive 4x4 pickup !!!! WTF... We walked the same distance.

We are getting as lazy as the US. This week in my new offices has been an eye opener about folk's reliance on cars. All car park passes get revoked at the end of September, so some folk are getting into a panic about a 4/5 mile commute across a city without a car. I have suggested a bike.... got looked upon like I was an alien !!

I've moved now, but one of my former neighbours used to hop in the car to fetch the paper, milk and cigarettes. It was about a ten minute walk to the local shop, but even that is seemingly beyond some people. Part of the problem is that the estate I used to live on was clearly constructed around car use, but laziness is undoubtedly also a big factor. I've also chatted to a taxi driver who told me that it's not at all uncommon to get very short fares to a cash point, off-licence, and home again.

I assume you were in the US ?

I was in Florida on holiday in Kissimee in the early 90's with my family. Me and my dad fancied a couple of pints. We'd spotted a 'bar' on the highway a few minutes drive away, so we walked. The locals thought we were nuts - it was about 30 minutes walk though ! Time to work up a thirst.

No, this was in the UK. Where I used to live I hardly ever saw people walking, as I said, mostly laziness, but also poor planning when the estate was designed and built.

Everything needs to change. Estates need to be designed and built that encourage walking and cycling with green, traffic-free routes, and a generally less car-centric approach.

Trouble is, while other countries have been doing the right thing, Britain has been doing the wrong thing for 30-40 years. Ever since car ownership exploded really.
