With the amount of dog sh*t on the cycle paths and shared pavements around here, slippery conditions are always possible........

Is it just me?
It's the first time I've noticed the BBC forecasting conditions on cycle paths.
Today from http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/ ..
There is a chance of difficult driving conditions on untreated roads and slippery conditions on pavements and cycle paths are possible.
Cracking... but I notice they stop short of pointing out that government advice in much of the country is for people to walk and cycle on the carriageway in these conditions, so motorists should drive so they can stop within what they can see to be clear.

No. Cambridge tried for a while but reportedly failed to train enough workers to operate the cycle track gritter. Searching this site should find a link to the report.

Personally, I've slid off on a gritted road (as ice remained that wouldn't have been enough to crash a car but was enough to take out a bike), so I now think a freeze means I should use studded tyres or wait for the thaw.

Perhaps the BBC/Met Office should concentrate on getting the basics correct first, before they try telling us what cycling conditions are going to be like. Yesterday was supposed to be dry, but cold here. It didn't stop raining - ALL day . Fairly typical of their forecasting in my experience. I use magic seaweed; it takes a bit more working out from the pressure charts but at least it gives you a rough idea of the coming weather. Unlike HM Govt's propaganda machine. I say that because they always give positive forecasts on Bank Holiday weekends - nothing at all to do with getting the population out on the motorways burning fuel and booking hotels so that the treasury and the economy in general gets a wee boost?

They did on the new segregated lane into Kingston during the last cold spell here - or at least they did on some of it

This is the current overview on the Leicester page:
  • This Evening and Tonight
A cold and rather cloudy night with scattered wintry showers. A widespread air frost is expected, but temperatures probably staying just above freezing near the coast.

I know there's an increase in the rate of coastal erosion on the East Coast, but......

How near the cliff edge are you?

The new £29 million Leeds Bradford Cycle Superhighway sometimes gets a sprinkling of grit, at least on the route east of Leeds, although it seems hit and miss which bits get done. Not sure how long this will go on for though given nor the council's predeliction for claiming poverty while spending £500k on refurbishing a meeting room...

BBC weather forecasting is bloody rubbish. Look at the Leicester page and it usually tells you about the weather on the coast.

Yep, the forecast on the BBC is generally the least reliable of them all, especially on a weekend.

Let's see if that changes this year, now that the Met Office have lost the BBC contract to a private company.

The forecast summary wordy bit is for the whole East Midlands, which has coastline. The hour-by-hour bit along the top is more localised.
