This one involves me.

I was cycling to Beckton Asda today at roughly 13:10 today. I approached the mini-roundabout, signally my intention to turn right with a raised and prominent right arm. A vehicle was approaching from the opposite direction, meaning that I had right of way. I made eye contact with the driver of the vehicle and began my right turn. At this point, the driver chose not to stop and contact was made between my front wheel and his rear offside wheel/wheel-arch.

My wheel was knocked out of centre with the handlebars (pretty much 90 degrees) and the wheel is now quite buckled. The driver stopped after the roundabout, suggesting that he realised there had been a collision, but decided to drive off as I approached the vehicle and continue south-bound on Woolwich Manor Way. My concern about the bike is that it still has the original chrome wheels, which are over 50 years old. As such, some of the spokes have seized and it may not be possible to fix it, which would mean a very time-consuming wheel build as I would be keeping the dynamo-hub if I had to replace the wheel. There is a Dr Bike surgery on my campus this Wednesday, so I will be taking the bike there to be checked over by a professional.

The car in question is a small, silver/grey hatchback - I am not sure of the make and model. I believe the registration was CX02 JXJ. The car had very dark tinted windows and damage from a previous collision around the near-side wheel arch. Thankfully, there was a witness who came forwards and spoke to the police with me.

In terms of injuries, I visited the hospital after experiencing pain in my left leg/hips 30 minutes after the incident - I expect the delay in pain being felt was due to shock. The doctor performed an examination and has told me that I have had some muscle damage to my back which is causing this pain/limp. I have been given 2 sets of strong painkillers and some back stretches to perform. I was also advised that I will need to speak to my GP for follow-up care and that the pain will take some time to die down.

Right now, I won't lie. I feel awful. That bike is a real part of me and I find myself believing that I could have avoided this by just recognising that the driver wasn't going to stop, so I guess mostly I'm feeling guilty. This is the first time I've ever been involved in a collision with another person in my 24 years of cycling, and also the first time that any damage has been caused to my bike which has made it temporarily unrideable.

I would like to ask that if anyone spots the car involved, please call the Metropolitan Police on 101 and report it's location and direction of travel, with incident number CAD4400 of 23/09/2013. Had the driver stopped and given me his insurance details, I would not be taking this any further. However, because this was a hit and run, I will be getting absolutely everything I can out of this guy - provided he is caught.

Now as this has taken up all of my day from 1pm until now, I haven't eaten since breakfast, so I will be sorting myself out a pizza delivery and some beers. Thanks guys.

If he's caught, then I really will be going in with both barrels blazing. As I said in the post, if he had just stopped and given me his details, then I would have left it at that. Now he's going to have to face me when I'm p*ssed off, and that's really not pleasant.

Bad news, Whiskey. You have my sympathy.

Were you turning into Tollgate Road and the scrote travelling north? Or have I got the wrong roundabout?

It's the mini-roundabout on the road into the car park. So I had turned into Asda and was just by the Arc car-wash/petrol station at the top of the car park. He was coming out and I was going in. 7 hours later and I still don't have the apples I went for!

Thanks @User13710 - it's good to hear that actually.

@deptfordmarmoset - turns out where it happened has a road name! I did not know this! It's Frobisher Road on Google Maps, which comes off the Woolwich Manor Way/Tollgate Road roundabout (though this was not the roundabout where the incident happened).

There's been some social media progress - I posted about the incident in the facebook group for Critical Mass London and a person there has identified the vehicle as a Toyota Corolla, which I then double-checked using the DVLA vehicle checker and the details match!

Just to update everyone, I dropped the report with the police today. Despite it being a hit & run incident that caused injury, the receptionist at the station reckons it will take the "specialist department" that looks into these matters around 6 weeks to get in contact with me - even though I have the vehicle registration and an independent witness!

Meanwhile, it's back to the doctors tomorrow. Ironically, I had booked the appointment about an hour before I was hit (it was initially only meant to be a new patient health check). The pills I've been given are interesting, I've been struggling through lectures today because I've been feeling very drunk from them!

I'll be calling the sustainability team tomorrow to double check that the bike mechanic is coming to campus tomorrow, but hopefully if all goes well, I'll be back in the saddle by tomorrow evening!

I hope none of you mind me sharing the experience. As I said, this is the first time I've been through anything like this and it's nice to be able to talk about it with people who understand it.

Whiskey, I really doubt that anyone here minds you sharing the experience. A lot of us have experienced collisions, and some have had hit-and-runs. Good luck with the wheel and remember, some people pay good money for those drugs they've put you on.

Thanks DM, I've joined LCC as a result and I'm hoping to use their legal advice service when there is the chance/reason to do so.

Btw, are these drugs stronger than I thought or is everyone genuinely a rabbit today?

What I mean by that is if the police don't get this guy and find out who the driver was, what really can I do?

You have reported it to the police, they I hope gave you an incident number. Contact the DVLA, saying that you would like to know the registered keeper/owner of the vehicle is. They will send a standard letter asking why you want the number, complete the letter sent & make certain that you have included the number given by the police on the letter. A fee is payable, ask when you phone how much.
Visit the MIB website & download both the untraceable driver & uninsured driver forms. At this stage you'll be looking at filling both & returning them. On them you will see at least two quotes are required for repair/replacement, as is a brief description of who did what. Don't rely on streetview, get out & take pictures from your viewpoint at the time of the incident.
Get down on paper what happenned. Initially your main concern is making certain you get EVERYTHING down, not everything down in the order they happenned! You'll work through your list & realise that in order for one thing to have happenned, something else on your list came before/after it. Number them & write your "Working Copy" from that. Include such details as time of day, road & traffic conditions & weather. Don't put assumptions down, as in "I assumed the driver was aware of me being on the road". Stick with what you do know & what you were forced to do, in order to minimize any possible damage or injury.
Who phoned for the police & was it from a mobile? Check with your service provider for the time the call was made, allow two-three days before they'll be able to give the time & the number dialled, call duration.
Get your witness to write down what they sae & did but avoid telling them what to write or how to write it.
Commuting section on here has a statement template from Vike on a Bike. Read that & the example he gives. Most of the forms that you'll encounter will be similar in nature, so once you start filling one you want them all to be telling the same sequence of events. Thats where your "Working Copy" comes into its own, every form should be filled using that. That way, every form you complete will read the same resulting in fewer questions being asked & hopefully what you're saying not being called into question at a later date.
Get yourself checked over & like the bike photograph any damage caused. Prefrably with a tape measure showing the size of any injury. Bruising will get bigger & possibly darker so photograph any & all changes seen.
If the medication is causing you problems, consider staying off the bike whilst taking them. Keep the containers they came in as these wil have the date they were prescribed to you on them. Given the problems you say they are causing you & assuming that they were prescribed afterwards, you'll have proof that they were not the cause of any of your actions.

What I don't understand is if you hit his offside rear, why didn't you brake & avoid hitting him?
