I found this at my local. It's a beer I've never heard of from a producer I've never heard of, yet they are only about two miles from my house!

This is a fantastic beer, as was the stout I had (twice) before this but can't remember the name of. 😬

I've never had a smoky beer before, or a white stout, but this is really good.

I appear to be on a Fat Cat mission. I was at the Fat Cat pub in Norwich last week and it's nothing like the Fat Cat in Sheffield but I discovered afterwards that there's also a Fat Cat and Canary in Norwich. In fact, it turns out that there are 5 Fat Cat pubs in England and I've now been to 3 of them. So a visit to Ipswich and Colchester and I'll have the set.

Pretty decent cask bitter. "Bitter Sweet Symphony"

Yesterday I went for a gentle 2 hour ride around the local countryside under an increasingly bright and warm sun, but not hitting the energy sapping 30+° we have experienced recently. Came home and thought it would be good to drink the single remaining bottle of belgian beer to go with the lunchtime sandwich.

You will not be surprised to hear it was absolutely delicious. What flavour is packed into such small quantity. It was, unsurprisingly, cloudy, with much sediment at the bottom but of course I forgot that and it went straight into my tumbler.
The keen-eyed amongst you will note, from the second image, the best before date expired 4 months ago but I do not think this was in any way detrimental. The label also suggests it should not be stored horizontally. No, it never was, so that's ok. Above this pictogram, it also suggests it should not be drunk from a tumbler. But that is all I have, so what should I use instead? A large wine glass?

Looked through the beer list for the East Anglian Beer Festival the other day and pleased to see a full compliment of Green Jack brews plus Earl Soham Victoria Bitter and Orkney Dark Island ;was most surprised to see Silly Saison from Belgium listed ,haven't had that since we were at Lille Braderie years ago were they had a mini bar mixed in with the antique and jumble stalls (was gorgeous even though we drank in the pouring rain!).

I think that's the production date, rather than the best before date, especially given they're not usually so specific about what time you have to drink it by on its last day.... 😎

I don't put all that much in store about what glass to drink from, though I do like those wide chalice style goblets for a lot of the Belgian ales. It's nonsense about having the right brand glass for most of it (though I admit I'm a sucker for them). It's worth getting a cheapo special offer Leffe with a glass gift box if you see one come round, as that's a good shape.

Do get yourself a Duvel glass if you're ever drinking Duvel though, you need the glass to get the amazing head!

Lastly, I'm insanely jealous - Westvleteren is very hard to get hold of and expensive, and I've never had their blond, despite being a huge fan of lower strength blonds (anything under 7% really, this is Belgian beer...). I'm not sure with the Westvleteren, but the Westmalle Extra (4.8%) used to be kept for the monks themselves - it's still a rare find in the bottle shops

In Tewkesbury overnight , went to the Cross

What an excellent looking pub... it is making me thirsty!

As I bought it 2 years ago, I think not !! The tiny typeface reads "Tenminste houdbaar tot" and "Mindestens haltbar bis" which all means absolutely zero to me, very strange languages but the french reads "A commencer de préférence avant" which I do understand well...best before, basically!

Excellent idea, will look out for that.

Indeed. But I did not realise this at the time. I was staying only 5.5km away from the monastery/brewery and it was in the local restaurant on the counter and in the convenience store opposite, so I thought it would be easy to find...wrong! Two days later it had disappeared from the convenience store and the restaurant. So I asked in the restaurant where they were hiding it, it was under the counter, so I bought a few bottles. But not enough of them! And yes, it was silly money, much cheaper in the convenience store.

I have since learned it is relatively easy to buy directly from the monastery BUT you do have to jump through a few hoops e.g. let them know a month prior to arrival you are coming, stating a specific time and the registration number of the vehicle you will be arriving in! I think there are other criteria too.

I have heard this of the Westvleteren too...the monks like to drink the 6 and sell the 8 and 12.
