Last night i tried a bottle of that new Crabbie's Alcoholic Ginger Beer. I was very dissapointed. I'd expected it to be a little more beery rather than tasting exactly like normal Ginger Beer. It was so sweet and easy to drink that it reminded me of the old alcopop days in the mid 90's with Turner's Hooch et al.

Tonight, to make amends i bought myself a bottle of ginger beer and 6 bottles of Young's Special and a couple of ordinary and am going to have a few real ginger beers.

So, to my point. I can't get enough of Young's bitters and ale's. They are all superb and whenever foreigners come to visit, i always insist they try it as "the best beer you'll ever try". Of course they disagree (bloody lager swilling foreigners). So, anyway.....

What is the best British beer?

Well, that depends what you want it for. Summer mid day pint? Winter evening with food? Session beer?

There are lots of good beers all over the place; and I like Youngs, Fullers and Greene King even if as a Yorkshireman I'm supposed to dismiss them as flat Southern rubbish.

In no particular order, Wadsworths 6X and Butcombe bitter from the Mendips; Jenning and Hartleys from the Lakes; Black Sheep, Timothy Taylors from round here and for a gallon+ evening (from my distant youth) Tetley mild.

I've always found Scottish and NE beers disappointing, but that may be from lack of local knowledge.

[confession] I bought some Sainsbury's Basic's beer the other day. 4 pack for under a quid! It's only 2% and you can tell that it is quite a lot lighter....but for the money it's not too bad. Certainly had no problem getting a can down [/confession]

I also have no embarrassment in admitting that basics wine is pretty good too for £2.58 a bottle!!

Best session ales are (imho) Kelham Island's Pale Rider, closely followed by Timmy Taylor's Landlord & Blue Monkey's Evolution, but If you want just a couple of stronger winter beers, then you can't go wrong with pretty much anything from Oakham Ales.

Taylors Landlord as a session beer? ;) Must be a definition thing, 'cos I could only do five or so.

Copper Dragon Golden Pippin gets my vote, as does Endeavour Bitter. Both less than 4% and therefore qualify as a " I could do half a dozen of those or more...."

The finest beer in the world. No one else comes close to Taylor's Landlord.

Agree to a point. But what about Cotleigh's tawnwy Bitter, or Exmoor Gold, or Beast. But, I do believe wholeheartedly that the beers from the Griffin brewery in Chiswick, Fuller,Smith and Turners to give the brewers their full name needs some beating.

But then again I am an ale lover and wherever I am in the country I always try to seek out the local brews.;)

That's the best thing to do. I like to drink Wye Valley Butty Bach or Kingstone's round here. There are plenty of excellent beers throughout the UK, but Taylor's Landlord eclipses everything I've ever tasted.

To me, a session ale is an ale with a ABV below 4.5%. Anything over that stength and 4or 5 pints is about the limit for me, would the other ale lovers agree?
