Looking at it from another point of view, wearing a life jacket/bouyancy aid as "I’m a good swimmer" how many times have I heard that, and how many people drown in boating accidents each year. I for one would not dream of going kayaking without a bouyancy aid it is there as a "back up", just like my helmet, inner tube ect

More people drown in inland waterways in cars than boats - strange but true. Motorists should therefore keep a life jacket under the seat like they do in planes.
And planes should keep parachutes under the seat which would make a lot more sense.

Because the probability increases when you go out on your bike? And please don't rebut this with 'Well peds should wear them because the chances of falling over walking on the pavement are greater then that of a cyclist.'' You can't rely on those stats because they are more peds walking the earth then there are cyclists.
[/quote]

The greatest danger to peds comes when they have to cross roads. Sure, they could look right, left &c. but too often they forget to. So about 600 or so get killed in Britain each year.
Yes, there are more peds than cyclists but this can be taken into account and when it is we find that peds actually have a slightly greater chance of being killed in a road accident than a cyclist for an equivalent journey.
So peds should helmet up when they cross roads. It could save their lives.
BTW Jesus brought Lazarus back from the dead, would that count as saving his life?

Bought a helmet today, for the simple reason that I do not want to die from falling or getting knocked off my bike and hitting my head, I'd rather live thank you.

The way I see it, if you're going to hit your head in a fatal way on a bike, you're given a chance to live, you have to be wearing a helmet for that chance though.

Be sure to wear it when crossing roads.

(O.K. Not really. Just look both ways.)

I wear a helmet when commuting as that's when I feel most at risk - riding fast with lots of self important idiots driving about - and I'm wearing all the gear so it looks ok.

If I'm tootling about town in 5-10 mph traffic on a Saturday doing my shopping on my single speed hack wearing casual clothes I wear no helmet, perhaps a flat cap, and pay lots of attention.
