Because they were deadly poor?
Nothing, it has been perfect except...
Some small Raleigh kids bike, a Tomahawk, a couple of Grifters, and Olympus 5 speed racer and then a Pug 10 speed. Passed the cycling proficiency 1st time back in 1979. A perfect cycling childhood the only blip being coming off at high speed and breaking my collar bone on day 1 of my last ever school summer holiday.
I've still got the Pug, well I re-bought one after getting rid of my original one. I deeply regret that. Also now have a modern hybrid which is ok but would like to get a modern road bike.
The only thing stopping me getting a modern road bike is the lack of these...

When, why and how did the duel lever brake setup ever get resigned to obscurity. I love them.
50 is the new 13...My biggest cycling disappointment is not taking it up until I turned 50.
But it is also the old 70!50 is the new 13...
I'm making jokes about it, but it is only 15 months before I will be nearer to 70 than to 50, which is a slightly disturbing prospect! But it is also the old 70!![]()
Could have been worse, you might have been on it.I recall 10 years of age, propping my pride and joy up against a wall on a particularly icy morning, went into the local shop, was in there 3 minutes and then there was an almighty crash outside. A Landrover had skidded on some ice and right into my bike, the bike was a write off, and I was out of action for 4 months. I did get a shiney new raleigh out of it though when the driver eventually coughed up, can't recall what bike it was though![]()
Doesn't bare thinking about!Could have been worse, you might have been on it.
