Wow, I am overwhelmed by so many kind and helpful responses and I am sorry for your own accident experiences too! Thank you to everyone who's taken the time and trouble, it's really made my day.

The doctor was not overly concerned (in my experience, they never are) and I did feel he wanted me out of there asap, however he did examine me fairly well. He said I probably had a mild concussion and he isn't worried about anything more serious at all. He has given me a phone number to the community physio - apparently you refer yourself these days - but said they wouldn't do anything for the first 4-6 weeks. Seems a bit high to me but will wait and see how I feel in a couple of weeks at least. There is always the British Osteopathy Society in Borough (London), I wholly recommend them, really good prices - it's just a bit of a trek for me to get there.

He also gave me some stronger pain killers as Ibuprofen hasn't done anything at all. I will self-certify as he said doctors are not allowed to provide doctor's notes for the first 7 days but I expect I will be back at work on Monday, feel a little better today though that could be the Codeine working.

@MichaelW2 With regards to the bike etc, I have added a photo of the offending snapped metal. The basket mount I bought on eBay a few years ago, it is no longer in my Purchase History due to eBay's irritating redesign of only keeping the last year's purchases, but I remember it was from Germany and it was a wicker basket and metal mount sold as one - two black metal bits attach to the front arms of the bike that hold the wheel (I know nothing about bike terminology) and then the metal fastening goes to the bit that holds the handlebars. I have mudguards front and back - I'm afraid I don't know what kind of brakes I have - I mean I don't know what they're called, it's the normal brakes that all bikes I know of have, I have just a cheap Ridgeback Motion bike. I didn't use the brakes though - the basket fell forward onto the front tyre and stopped it dead.

@classic33 I am puzzled as to exactly how I crashed - might have been full frontal as chin and tooth and annoyingly and oddly the space between mouth and nose (this bit has now gone beautifully yellow and crusty and looks like a junkie type sore more than anything) took the worst hit, and oddly the bridge to the right side of my nose and left side of my jaw has scrapes, also the chest and my gloves took a bit of a beating. A bit like a violent snog with the asphalt!

Thanks again to everyone who have been so helpful

glad to read you are "on the mend" and not suffered any significant injury, the metal bracket you are showing us looks to have snapped, metal fatigue I would imagine probably due to vibration whilst riding the bike. The metal the mounting bracket is made of does not look very substantial as well

Agree, in hindsight it looks a bit weak. I will have to chalk it up to experience and if I ever use a basket again (I am very wary of the prospect at the moment, irrational, I know) I will use industrial strength fastenings!

@Lilylove, keep an eye on your vision. As with any head impact they'll be the first sign to you, that something is far from right.
I'm not medically trained, just passing on advice I got from a specialist following a head injury.
